The grand Marian festival of Roccafiorita, between the village and the sanctuary on Mount Kalfa
Roccafiorita is one of the smallest municipalities in Italy, perched at an altitude of over 600 meters in the Agrò Valley, in the province of Messina. Yet, every year, the village becomes the center of one of the most intense Marian devotions in the region: the Madonna dell'Aiuto Festival. It is a celebration that weaves together popular faith, mountain landscapes, and community tradition, attracting not only residents but also numerous emigrants returning for the occasion and pilgrims from various parts of Sicily.
The devotion began in 1923, when three local youths—brothers Carmelo and Alessandro Occhino with their cousin Filippo—purchased a small terracotta statue of the Madonna at the San Pietro fair. During the Second World War, Carmelo Occhino, a non-commissioned officer in the Air Force, survived a bombing after invoking the Madonna dell'Aiuto. In gratitude, he commissioned a life-sized statue from the La Rosa studio in Rome, which was blessed by Pope Pius XII in March 1943. The statue arrived in Roccafiorita in the midst of the war and, on May 24, 1945, the feast of Mary Help of Christians, it was carried in procession to the summit of Mount Kalfa, at an altitude of about 800 meters, where the first mass was celebrated and the sanctuary was established.
The festival still preserves this double annual appointment today:
The late August festival follows a traditional pattern: on Friday, the statue ascends to the sanctuary accompanied by the brass band, and the first solemn mass is celebrated; on Saturday, the procession around the mountain takes place, with the evening candlelight vigil of the pilgrims illuminating the summit, visible from afar; on Sunday, the statue is brought back to the village for a solemn mass and a procession through the town center, while the Stations of the Cross wind along the hill in front of the church. The conclusion is marked by a fireworks display.
The Madonna dell'Aiuto Festival in Roccafiorita is one of the August Marian celebrations of the Agrò Valley and the Chiodaro area, part of a calendar involving neighboring towns. It is considered the penultimate of the great Marian festivals in the district before the Madonna della Catena in Mongiuffi Melia. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Messina mountains and a popular devotion that remains deeply alive.
For 2026, the Madonna dell'Aiuto Festival in Roccafiorita renews its traditional structure. On May 24th, the statue is carried in pilgrimage from the parish church to the sanctuary on Mount Kalfa, where it remains for the summer. The main festival is scheduled for the last week of August and is spread over three days: Friday, the ascent to the sanctuary with the band and the first solemn mass; Saturday, the procession around the mountain with the evening candlelight vigil; Sunday, the return of the statue to the village, the solemn mass, the procession through the town center, the Stations of the Cross, and the final fireworks display.
The detailed civil and religious program for the 2026 edition is generally published by the Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event.

Roccafiorita is located in the Agrò Valley, in the Peloritani mountains in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the Roccalumera or Santa Teresa di Riva exit, then heading inland along the valley's provincial roads.
Ascent to the sanctuary on May 24th; main festival during the last week of August.
The ascent to the sanctuary on Mount Kalfa is done on foot: comfortable shoes and water are recommended. The evening candlelight vigil is particularly evocative. As it is a small village, it is best to stay in the nearby coastal towns (Santa Teresa di Riva, Roccalumera) for overnight accommodation.
