The grand patronal feast of Mongiuffi Melia, featuring nocturnal pilgrimages and processions in the Peloritani Mountains
The Feast of Maria SS. della Catena is the most important patronal celebration in Mongiuffi Melia, a small town in the Peloritani Mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of north-eastern Sicily. Every year, on the first Sunday of September, the village gathers around the Virgin in an atmosphere of devotion that unites entire families and draws back many emigrants for the occasion. It is considered one of the most evocative religious festivals in the entire Peloritani region.
The cult of the Madonna della Catena in Mongiuffi dates back to the early 15th century. The Sanctuary of the Catena stands in the Fanaca district, near the springs of the Chiodaro river, and houses the statue of the Virgin from May until the September festivities. The return of the statue to the Mother Church of Mongiuffi represents the highlight of the festival.
A distinctive feature of the festival is the pilgrimages on foot that lead the faithful to the Sanctuary in the days leading up to the first Sunday of September. Many travel long distances at night along rugged paths, often barefoot and carrying heavy lit torches as an act of sacrifice and purification. Once at the Sanctuary, the day is marked by masses and prayers.
On Saturday evening, a suggestive procession of the statue takes place around the sacred site, highly anticipated by the faithful. On Sunday afternoon, the most emotional moment is renewed: the statue of the Virgin, carried on shoulders, returns in a solemn procession to the Mother Church of Mongiuffi, accompanied by hymns, lights, and intense popular participation. The festivities usually continue until Monday with a procession through the streets of the town.
Alongside the religious services, the festival offers a secular program with a brass band, market stalls along the village streets, entertainment, dancing, and fireworks that light up the Peloritani sky. It is an opportunity to taste the flavors of local cuisine and experience the authentic atmosphere of a small town in the province of Messina in celebration.
Devotion to the Madonna della Catena recalls an ancient Sicilian tradition linked to 1397, when—according to popular legend—three innocent men sentenced to death in Palermo saw their chains miraculously break while they were praying to the Virgin. Hence the title "Madonna della Catena" (Our Lady of the Chain), venerated in numerous towns on the island and particularly dear to the community of Mongiuffi Melia.
The 2026 Feast of Maria SS. della Catena in Mongiuffi Melia (province of Messina) will reach its central moment on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the first Sunday of the month. The festivities will follow the usual schedule: pilgrimages on foot in the preceding days towards the Sanctuary of the Catena in the Fanaca district, masses and prayers, the Saturday evening procession around the Sanctuary, and, on Sunday afternoon, the solemn return of the statue to the Mother Church of Mongiuffi amidst hymns, lights, and popular participation. The secular program will also feature a brass band, market stalls, and fireworks. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and celebrations, will be published by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Mongiuffi Melia is located in the Peloritani Mountains, in the hinterland of the Ionian coast of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the Taormina or Roccalumera-Mongiuffi Melia exit and heading inland. The nearest train station is on the Ionian coast (Taormina-Giardini or Roccalumera), from where you can continue by car to the village.
The festival is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, with festivities lasting several days (roughly from Friday to Monday). The celebrations take place between the Sanctuary of the Catena (Fanaca district) and the Mother Church of Mongiuffi.
Access to the village and religious services is free. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the trails and the steep streets of the town, and it is advisable to check the final program with the parish or the Municipality.
