The patronal feast of the Baglio-Ficara district on the Ionian coast of Messina
The Feast of the Madonna della Catena is one of the most deeply felt religious and popular events in Roccalumera, a town on the Ionian coast in the province of Messina, Sicily. The Madonna della Catena is the patron saint of the Baglio-Ficara district and, together with Saint Basil the Great, protector of the Roccalumera-Santa Teresa di Riva vicariate. Devotion to the Virgin spans generations and draws the faithful from the entire Ionian region every year.
The heart of the festival is the ancient 19th-century wooden statue of the Madonna, housed in the Church of Santa Maria della Catena. The building has a complex construction history: the first core dates back to 1893, the second to 1937, and the structure was completed in 1983, thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of the residents of the Baglio and Ficara districts. The church features a Latin cross plan, a coffered ceiling with rosettes and artistic stained glass, and preserves the venerated effigy on the high altar, as well as a museum of sacred vestments and a library dedicated to Monsignor Giuseppe Scarcella.
The main festival is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. Numerous well-attended masses are held in the morning; in the afternoon, the solemn procession takes place, accompanying the statue carried on shoulders by bearers through the streets of the district, which are richly and devoutly decorated every year by the inhabitants with lights, drapes, flowers, candles, banners, and garlands. The custom of donating jewelry and precious objects as ex-voto offerings, which enrich the golden mantle adorning the Virgin during the festival days, remains widespread.
In some editions, the devotion extends to the sea with a evocative sea procession, during which the statue is carried aboard a fishing boat for the blessing of the boats and fishermen, testifying to the bond between the community and its Ionian identity. The return of the procession is preceded by the performance of an ancient dialectal chant inspired by the text of the Ave Maria, a moment of strong collective emotion.
Alongside the religious services, the festival committee and pastoral workers organize convivial evenings that involve adults and children, enlivening the district throughout the celebration period. At midnight, a sumptuous fireworks display illuminates the sky over the coast and concludes the festival, offering one of the most anticipated spectacles of the Roccalumera summer.

The detailed religious and civil program, organized by the parish of Santa Maria della Catena, is generally released in the weeks leading up to the feast.
