A centuries-old devotion in the heart of Western Sicily

The Madonna del Ponte Festival is the cornerstone of devotional life in Partinico, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. The cult of Maria Santissima del Ponte dates back to the 15th century and is linked to the Cistercian abbots of the Santa Maria di Altofonte Monastery: the venerated image is a copy of the one kept in Altofonte, and the sanctuary's origins are intertwined with the ancient lands of the Partinico forest. Domenica in Albis: the return of the painting to the city

The spring celebration takes place on Domenica in Albis, the first Sunday after Easter. This is when the painting of the Madonna leaves the countryside sanctuary and is carried in procession to the Mother Church in the center of Partinico, where it remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful until the great August festival. The descent of the painting at noon is one of the most moving moments: thousands of devotees reach the sanctuary to accompany the image along its journey to the city.

Rituals, torches, and folk traditions

The week of festivities blends deep religious faith with popular folklore. Some of the most characteristic rituals include:

• The dressing of the painting: in the days leading up to the feast, the image is adorned with silver garments and ornaments created by the devotion of the local people.
• The night-time torchlight procession: parish communities march with lit torches from Piazza Municipio towards the sanctuary in a suggestive evening pilgrimage.
• Confraternities and authorities: the solemn procession involves confraternities, deputies, priests, and civil, religious, and military authorities.
• The sfincione food festival: the typical Palermo-style baked specialty accompanies the eve of the feast with a highly anticipated gastronomic event, followed by a fireworks display.

A festival that spans the year

Devotion to the Madonna del Ponte does not end in spring: the painting remains in the Mother Church until the August festival, celebrated with lights, market stalls, musical and folk performances, and a solemn procession, before returning to the sanctuary in autumn. The spring festival in Partinico is thus the start of a long journey of faith that marks the entire year and has united the whole community for generations.
