Celebrations in Honor of the Madonna della Mercede

A devotion rooted in the heart of Giardinello

The Celebrations in honor of the Madonna della Mercede represent the most cherished religious and popular event in Giardinello, a small town in the Sicilian hinterland near Palermo, part of the Archdiocese of Monreale. Celebrated around September 24th, the liturgical day dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, the festival unites the entire community every year in a tapestry of faith, identity, and tradition that also involves the faithful from nearby Carini.

The Sanctuary, unique in Sicily

The heart of the festivities is the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Mercede, the only one in Sicily dedicated to this Marian devotion. Its history dates back to the 19th century, when the icon of the Madonna arrived in the town, likely from the Convent of San Lorenzo in Carini, which was entrusted to the Mercedarian Fathers. The church was opened for worship in May 1918 and was elevated to a Sanctuary on April 8, 1985, by the will of Monsignor Salvatore Cassisa. The devotion is linked to the Mercedarian Order, founded by Saint Peter Nolasco in 1218 and dedicated to the redemption of Christian captives.

The festival program

Celebrations take place in the days leading up to September 24th with a triduum of spiritual preparation and community prayer. In recent editions, the festival has also welcomed the relics of Blessed Pina Suriano, while the solemn Eucharistic celebration is presided over within the Sanctuary. The highlight occurs on the evening of September 24th with:

• the solemn procession of the venerated statue of the Madonna della Mercede through the streets of the village;
• the evening fireworks display, organized by the festival committee, which concludes the day of festivities;
• moments of gathering and popular devotion that animate the town squares.

An event for the whole community

More than just a religious recurrence, the feast of the Madonna della Mercede is a moment of strong cohesion for Giardinello: an occasion where the community reconnects with its roots, the graces received, and a devotion passed down from generation to generation. The large turnout of the faithful, including visitors from outside the town, testifies to how deeply this event is embedded in the social fabric of this small municipality in the province of Palermo.
