The devotional festival of the Albergheria district in Palermo

In the heart of Palermo, within the Albergheria district—one of the city's four historic quarters in Sicily—one of the capital's most deeply rooted Marian processions is renewed every year. The protagonist is the wax statue of Maria Santissima Addolorata alle Balate, kept inside the church of San Francesco Saverio and venerated by the Confraternity that bears her name.
The roots of this devotion date back to the 18th century. An initial confraternity, the "dei reali algoziri," was founded on November 25, 1775, at the church of the Annunziata alle Balate; on April 6, 1913, the association was renewed, taking the title of Confraternity of the Addolorata. The purpose of the confraternity has always been "the moral and religious perfection of its members, under the protection of Maria Santissima Addolorata, whose cult they promote." The members wear a characteristic black habit, and their seat is now in the church of San Francesco Saverio, within the parish of San Nicolò all'Albergheria.
The festival is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of September. The day opens with a solemn Holy Mass in the morning; in the afternoon, the procession of devotees begins, following the vara (float) of the Addolorata. The wax statue of the Virgin is placed on an artistic, richly flower-adorned float and carried on shoulders through the narrow streets of the district, amidst moments of prayer, stops, and reflection.
The procession is traditionally accompanied by prestigious Sicilian brass bands, such as the "Pietro Mascagni" Addolorata Band of Trapani and the "Giuseppe Verdi" Band of Caltanissetta. The evening concludes with a fireworks display, in keeping with the ancient custom of Sicilian patronal festivals that combine religious and popular dimensions.
Walking through Albergheria during the procession means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic districts of Palermo, the same one that hosts the famous historic Ballarò market. Decorated alleys, courtyards, and balconies provide the backdrop for an event that is both an act of faith and a celebration of community identity, proudly guarded by the members of the confraternity and the residents of the district.
As every year, the Confraternity of Maria SS. Addolorata alle Balate is set to renew the solemn procession of the Virgin's wax statue, kept in the Church of San Francesco Saverio in the heart of Albergheria in Palermo. The festival is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of September, with Holy Mass in the morning and the devotional procession in the afternoon along the streets of the district. The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: information will be updated as soon as the confraternity releases official dates and details.
