Trabia's patronal feast: a blend of faith, sea, and tradition
The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival is the main patronal feast of Trabia, a town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Every year, on the last Sunday of September, the historic center lights up to celebrate the town's patron saint: an event that combines deep faith, historical memory, and the unmistakable warmth of a Sicilian village festival, drawing faithful and visitors from neighboring towns.
The origins of the festival date back to 1830, when a young fisherman named Carlo Bondรฌ found a bronze cross โ dating back to the first quarter of the 16th century โ inside a cave beneath the Lanza castle, the ancient residence of the princes who ruled the fiefdom of Trabia. According to popular tradition, the town was suffering from a terrible drought at the time: after the clergy and the prince organized a solemn procession with the cross, the famine suddenly ended. The event was interpreted as a divine sign, and the Crucifix has been venerated as the patron saint ever since.
The core of the festival is the "Truvata ra cruci", the historical re-enactment of the discovery of the cross. A procession of participants in period costumes โ including fishermen, noble families, and municipal officials โ moves from the "Fuori Porta" arch: the fishermen, aboard a towed boat, carry the bronze cross simulacrum to the Mother Church, where it is handed over to the parish priest. The Sunday concludes with the solemn procession of the Crucifix simulacrum through the streets of the town, accompanied by the parish confraternities.
The patronal day is announced early in the morning by the alborata. Along the main street, dozens of stalls enliven the promenade, while the sounds of drummers, the brass band, and the traditional masculiata โ the spectacular battery of blank shots that marks the key moments โ fill the air. There is no shortage of neighborhood games and, as a grand finale, a musical show in the square and the unmissable fireworks that illuminate the sky over the sea.
A seaside village between Termini Imerese and the Palermo area, Trabia offers visitors the charm of its seafront, the Lanza castle, and a cuisine that highlights fish and traditional Sicilian products. The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival is the best opportunity to discover the authentic soul of the town, between the sacred and the profane, in one of the most beloved events of the local calendar.
The 2026 Santissimo Crocifisso Festival in Trabia is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026, in accordance with the custom that places the patronal feast on the last Sunday of the month. The traditional framework is confirmed โ re-enactment of the "Truvata ra cruci", procession of the Crucifix, alborata, masculiata, and fireworks โ but the complete official program, with times and locations, has not yet been published and will be announced by the Municipality and the parish closer to the event.
Trabia is located along the Tyrrhenian coast of the Metropolitan City of Palermo. By car, take the Trabia exit on the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway. By train, the Trabia station is served by the Palermo-Messina line. The nearest airport is the Falcone-Borsellino airport in Palermo.
The festivities are concentrated in the last week of September, with the climax on Sunday. For the 2026 edition, the date is September 27; the detailed program is published by the Municipality and the parish in the preceding weeks.
Events and the procession take place in the historic center: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outer areas. Admission to all events is free.
