About Madonna del Furi

Every last Sunday of May, Cinisi (Province of Palermo) celebrates the Madonna del Furi Feast, one of the most deeply felt devotions in Western Sicily. On Saturday evening, a picturesque candlelight procession winds from the town center to the Sanctuary, nestled in the valley outside the town; on Sunday, the highly anticipated Virgineddi Festival takes place, featuring the free distribution of homemade pasta with fava beans, prepared by the faithful as a votive offering. A centuries-old tradition that weaves together faith, folklore, and rustic flavors.

The Madonna del Furi Feast in Cinisi

In the heart of spring, on the last weekend of May, the town of Cinisi, in the Province of Palermo, gathers around one of its most ancient and identity-defining traditions: the Madonna del Furi Feast, popularly known as Bedda Matri di lu Furi. The celebration, which combines moments of intense religious devotion with a grand popular festival, attracts faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors every year to the Sanctuary located in the valley behind the town.

Origins and Devotional Tradition

The cult dates back to the 17th century, when shepherds began praying before an image of the Virgin painted on the wall of an ancient farmhouse. Devotion strengthened after the apparition of 1718, linked to the figure of Antonio Briguglio, and the Sanctuary was built during the 18th century. After a period of abandonment, the site was restored in the 19th century, and in 1983, a dedicated committee was formed for its care. Today, the Sanctuary, managed by the Parish of Cinisi, remains a spiritual landmark for the entire community.

The Saturday Evening Candlelight Procession

The most evocative moment of the feast is the Saturday evening candlelight procession: from the main church in the center of Cinisi, a long procession of the faithful, carrying lit torches and candles, winds along the road leading to the Sanctuary nestled in the countryside. A copy of the ancient Marian image is carried in procession to the site of worship, where Holy Mass is celebrated in an atmosphere of deep reflection.

The Virgineddi Festival

Sunday is entirely dedicated to the Virgineddi Festival, the gastronomic event that gives the celebration its name. A group of the faithful prepares, in fulfillment of a vow, large quantities of homemade pasta seasoned with fava beans: the dish is called virgineddi ("little virgins") and is distributed for free to all those present. Alongside the communal table, there are songs, dances, and local folklore performances that enliven the day until evening.

Between Faith, Folklore, and Rustic Flavors

The Madonna del Furi Feast is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a collective ritual that preserves the rural memory of Cinisi and all of Western Sicily. The sharing of the meal, folk groups, and the sound of drums accompany a day of community where popular traditions, devotion, and hospitality merge in the greenery of the Furi valley.
