About Night of Lights

Every year, on the night between September 1st and 2nd, Terrasini renews one of Sicily's oldest and most evocative traditions: the Night of Lights. It commemorates the terrible earthquake that struck Palermo and its surrounding towns on September 1, 1726, from which Terrasini was miraculously spared. A few minutes before midnight, the bells of the Mother Church ring out in a peal while citizens light lamps and candles in front of their homes, gathered in prayer. A path of lights, music, and narrating voices accompanies the community from the sea to Piazza Duomo, in an atmosphere of rare spiritual intensity.

A tradition nearly three hundred years old

The Night of Lights is one of the oldest and most identity-defining popular commemorations in Sicily, preserved uninterruptedly by the community of Terrasini, in the province of Palermo. Every year, on the night between September 1st and 2nd, the town renews the memory of a dramatic event that forever marked the territory: the earthquake that struck Palermo and nearby centers on the night of September 1, 1726, causing over two hundred casualties.

The miracle and the origin of the tradition

According to the tradition passed down orally from generation to generation, Terrasini was spared from the catastrophe, and the miracle was attributed to the intercession of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, the town's patron saint. As a sign of gratitude, an edict from the Archbishop of Palermo on September 22, 1726, established that every year, on the anniversary night, the church bells would ring in memory of the escaped danger. In Terrasini, it was Baron La Grua who permanently established this solemn ringing, which has become a deeply felt rite over the centuries: today, this ancient custom survives almost exclusively here, becoming a full-fledged part of the town's cultural heritage.

Lamps, bells, and a path of light

The heart of the commemoration takes place in Piazza Duomo, in front of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie. A few minutes before midnight, the bells ring out in a peal, while families light lamps and candles in front of their homes, illuminating the streets of the center and creating a suspended, reflective atmosphere. The municipal administration, together with the Pro Loco and local associations, organizes an evocative path of lights and music that, starting from the sea, crosses the Lungomare Peppino Impastato and Piazza Municipio before reaching Piazza Duomo, accompanied by a narrating voice that recounts what happened three hundred years ago.

Spectacle, memory, and identity

Alongside the religious rite, the evening is enriched by performances curated by local cultural associations, with choreographic representations that evoke the fury of the earthquake, the deep bond between the people of Terrasini and the sea, and the final message of grace and rebirth. It is an event that unites devotion, historical memory, and popular participation, capable of involving both residents and the numerous visitors who reach this seaside village on the Gulf of Castellammare during these early September evenings.

Terrasini and Sicily

Overlooking the sea between Palermo and the Gulf of Castellammare, Terrasini is one of the tourist gems of western Sicily, known for its beaches, its seaside village, and the nearby Cala Rossa coastline. The Night of Lights represents the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic soul of the town, at a time when the summer season is drawing to a close and the community gathers around a memory shared for nearly three centuries.
