About Madonna del Carmine

Every July 16th, Vasto celebrates the Madonna del Carmine, one of the city's most deeply felt Marian devotions. The day centers around the 18th-century Chiesa del Carmine, featuring morning masses, a solemn late-afternoon concelebration, and the traditional procession carrying the statue of the Virgin through the alleys of the historic center, accompanied by local confraternities and the San Martino Band.

An ancient devotion in Vasto's historic center

The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in Vasto, in the province of Chieti, along the Trabocchi Coast of Abruzzo. Every July 16th, the city pays homage to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel with a day of celebrations that culminates in a procession through the streets of the old town. It is a tradition that blends popular faith, historical memory, and civic identity, drawing faithful, confraternities, and curious onlookers to the Chiesa del Carmine every year.

The Chiesa del Carmine, the heart of the festival

The spiritual center of the festival is the Chiesa di Maria Santissima del Carmine, one of Vasto's most precious monuments. Its origins date back to 1362, when it stood under the name of San Nicola degli Schiavoni, officiated by the Croatian community (the "Schiavoni") settled in the city. Rebuilt in 1638 and dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, it was profoundly renovated between 1758 and 1761 based on the design of Neapolitan architect Mario Gioffredo, who gave it the elegant Greek cross plan with five chapels and the dome that still characterize it today. Inside, it preserves paintings by Crescenzo La Gamba, Fedele Fischetti, and other artists, a testament to the bond between the city and the powerful d'Avalos family of marquises.

The procession and the role of the confraternities

The most anticipated moment is the procession which, at the end of the late-afternoon Eucharistic concelebration, accompanies the statue of the Virgin along the streets of the historic center. Local confraternities and the historic San Martino Musical Band of Vasto participate in a parade that weaves together hymns, prayer, and music. The care of the festival is entrusted to the Confraternity of Maria Santissima del Carmine, reconstituted in 2009 by the Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Monsignor Bruno Forte, who brought the ancient sodality linked to the church back to life.

The meaning of the festival

The celebration commemorates the apparition of the Madonna to Saint Simon Stock, which occurred on July 16, 1251, on Mount Carmel, when, according to tradition, the Virgin gave the scapular to the devotees. For this reason, in addition to the procession, the Vasto festival preserves typically Carmelite rites such as the consecration to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel and the imposition of the scapular. In the nine days preceding July 16, the preparatory Novena is held, with evening celebrations in the church involving the parish community.

Vasto in celebration

The Madonna del Carmine Festival is part of the summer calendar of Vasto, a city of art and one of the most beloved seaside destinations in Abruzzo. Those arriving for the festival can combine a visit to the old town, with Palazzo d'Avalos and the Cathedral of San Giuseppe, and a walk towards the Loggia Amblingh overlooking the gulf. An opportunity to experience an authentic tradition and discover the most intimate face of the city.
