About Carmine Festival

Every mid-July, San Cipriano Picentino gathers to honor the Madonna del Carmine. The celebration features a preparatory novena, an evening candlelight procession carrying the Virgin's image to Parco Madonnella, and the solemn July 16th procession returning to the Mother Church via Piazza Umberto I and Via Botteghe. This devotion, documented since the late 18th century, is tied to the 1895 discovery of a small statue and the historic Carmine Fair established in 1931, serving as the defining cultural identity for this village in the province of Salerno, Campania.

The defining festival of San Cipriano Picentino

The Madonna del Carmine Festival is the most cherished devotional event in San Cipriano Picentino, a small town of just over six thousand residents nestled on the slopes of the Monti Picentini, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Every year, around July 16th, the town and its hamlets—Filetta, Campigliano, Pezzano, and Vignale—come together for days that weave liturgy, rural heritage, and community life.

A devotion born in the 18th century

The cult of the Virgin of Mount Carmel has been documented in San Cipriano Picentino since the second half of the 18th century. The Mother Church houses a painting by Michele Ricciardi, dating between 1740 and 1748, depicting the Madonna showing the scapular to the prophet Elijah and Saint Simon Stock: it is the oldest testimony of a devotion that has become a shared heritage of the entire town over the centuries.

The 1895 discovery and the Carmine Chapel

The story known to everyone in town, however, is that of May 6, 1895. The farmer Giuseppe Cioffi, after repeated dreams urging him to search, found a small ceramic statue of the Madonna del Carmine among some ruins in the Mandrizzo area and placed it in a simple stone shrine. The growing influx of pilgrims prompted a civic committee to build a larger chapel, consecrated on July 16, 1931, and built largely through the voluntary work of the inhabitants: a rectangular building closed by a semicircular apse. The original statue was stolen in 1975; the chapel was restored in 2007 with regional funds and remains a pilgrimage destination to this day.

The Carmine Fair

On July 30, 1931, the event was officially established as an annual festival fixed for July 16th, and religious celebrations were accompanied by a fair with a cattle and pig market, designed to support local trade and the farming families of the Picentini area. This is the origin of the dual soul that still characterizes these days: on one hand, prayer; on the other, the village festival, with stalls, sweets, illuminations, and intergenerational gatherings.

Highlights of the festival

  • The novena of preparation, with evening services in the days leading up to the solemnity.
  • The opening candlelight procession: gathering at 7:00 PM at the Mother Church followed by a torchlit parade accompanying the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Parco Madonnella.
  • The Holy Masses on July 16th, traditionally celebrated at 8:30 AM and 7:30 PM.
  • The solemn procession which, at the end of the evening celebration, departs from Parco Madonnella and crosses the provincial road, the municipal seat, Piazza Umberto I, and Via Botteghe before returning to the Mother Church.
  • The evening social gatherings, with moments of prayer and reflection, and the traditional prize games that close the eve of the festival.

Parco Madonnella

The heart of the festival is Parco Madonnella, the green area surrounding the Carmine chapel, donated to the Municipality by the heirs of the Milella family in 2000. On July evenings, it becomes a small natural amphitheater: families arrive on foot from the center, young people stay until late at night, and the torchlit procession winding back up to the chapel remains the most photographed image of the event.

Why it's worth the trip

Visitors from outside will find an authentic patronal festival here, far from tourist circuits: no scenery built for visitors, but a community repeating gestures handed down for over a century. Nearby, the Picentini territory offers chestnut forests, hiking trails, and a mountain gastronomic tradition—chestnuts, dairy products, cured meats, and rustic dishes—found in other events on the local calendar. Salerno and the Amalfi Coast are just a few kilometers away, making San Cipriano Picentino a quiet base for a midsummer stopover.
