The centuries-old devotion of Ottati, between the sanctuary in the green Alburni mountains and the torchlight procession

In the heart of summer, the small village of Ottati, perched on the Alburni Mountains in the province of Salerno (Campania), gathers for the Madonna del Cardoneto Festival. This is the most deeply rooted religious tradition for the local community: a centuries-old Marian devotion that, every August 15th (Assumption Day), brings together families, returning emigrants, and visitors from the neighboring Calore and Fasanella valleys.
The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Cardoneto is located outside the village, immersed in the greenery of the Cardoneto oasis towards the Fasanella valley. Originally a modest church, it was expanded in 1781, though it had been a pilgrimage destination since the mid-18th century. Inside, it houses three altars dedicated to the Madonna—the main one made entirely of marble, topped by a niche holding the statue of the Virgin—and a noteworthy 15th-century wall-mounted statue of the Virgin. Its secluded position, surrounded by fields and woods, is an integral part of the festival's charm: reaching it requires a journey through the countryside.
The festival day begins at dawn and continues until late at night. The highlight is the afternoon procession: the faithful accompany the Virgin along a challenging, uphill path from the sanctuary in the countryside to the historic center of Ottati. By the time the procession reaches the first houses, it is dark, and the entry into the village is illuminated by torches, creating one of the most iconic images of August in Ottati. A solemn Holy Mass marks the day alongside the processional walk.
In the summer calendar organized by the Municipality of Ottati and local associations, the week of Ferragosto is entirely dedicated to the Madonna del Cardoneto. Celebrations take place between August 14th and 15th, with Mass and the procession followed by musical entertainment in the village squares. Access to all celebrations and events in Ottati is traditionally free.
A long-standing sporting and popular tradition is linked to the religious festival: the unique Cardoneto Cross-Country Race, held on August 16th, the day after the main festivities, along the same paths and fields traversed by the procession. It is the village's way of extending the celebration, blending devotion, sport, and outdoor life.
The Cardoneto area is the hub of August in Ottati, hosting various events that frame the Marian patronal festival:
With just over six hundred inhabitants, Ottati is a medieval village that slopes gently towards the Calore valley, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The vast municipal territory, covered in beech, turkey oak, chestnut, and alder trees, is beloved by hikers and trekking enthusiasts. Here, one can find the springs of the Fasanella river and the famous Auso Cave. The town's patron saint is Saint Blaise, celebrated on February 3rd, but it is the Madonna del Cardoneto that defines the emotional calendar of the year, when the village fills up again in August. Visiting Ottati during the festival means encountering an authentic inland Campania, made of stone, woods, and shared rituals.
At the time of our last check, no official dates had been published for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Cardoneto Festival in Ottati, in the province of Salerno. This is a deeply rooted annual event, traditionally celebrated in August around the Assumption, so the festival is expected to take place again this year.
The structure of the festival has been established for generations: a solemn Holy Mass, a procession that climbs the long uphill stretch from the sanctuary in the countryside to the village, arrival in town at dusk with torches, and, subsequently, moments of musical entertainment in the squares. The following day, the traditional Cardoneto Cross-Country Race is held.
The detailed program for the Ottati summer is usually published by the Municipality of Ottati in the first days of August, along with the calendar of other monthly events. For dates, Mass times, and the starting point of the procession, it is best to consult the official institutional channels of the Municipality and parish communications.
The celebrations are held at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Cardoneto, in the Cardoneto area, just outside the village of Ottati (84020, province of Salerno), and in the historic center, with the procession arriving at Piazza Umberto I.
Participation in religious celebrations is free, as is access to events organized by the Municipality of Ottati.
