About Madonna dei Miracoli

In Nocera Inferiore, Easter takes on a distinct Marian character. For generations, the statues of the Madonna dei Miracoli and the Saints Eligio and Emiddio have descended from the Sanctuary of Monte Albino to traverse the city. From Palm Sunday to Easter Tuesday, the town celebrates with processions through local neighborhoods and foothills, the traditional blessing of the animals, and a poignant evening candlelight vigil. It is the defining cultural event of the Agro nocerino-sarnese region in the province of Salerno.

A festival descending from the mountain

The Madonna dei Miracoli Festival is the most deeply felt devotional event in Nocera Inferiore, located in the heart of the Agro nocerino-sarnese, in the province of Salerno (Campania). Every year, during the days surrounding Easter, the city gathers around the statues of the Madonna dei Miracoli and Saints Eligio and Emiddio, which leave the sanctuary of Monte Albino to travel through neighborhoods, districts, and city streets in a long sequence of processions, masses, and popular rites. As Father Vincenzo Spinelli noted, the city «does not simply experience an anniversary» but «lives an unbreakable bond with the Madonna dei Miracoli».

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli on Monte Albino

The Marian complex stands at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, halfway up Monte Albino in the Montalbino area. Its origins date back to a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna dei Pigni, a resting place for farmers traveling toward the markets of Amalfi. In 1530, the Nocera mercenary captain Giambattista Castaldo transformed it into a convent to fulfill a vow, entrusting it to the Olivetan monks. The monastery once housed works of great value, including a painting by Raphael, now in Washington, and canvases by Marco Pino.

Following the devastating landslide of December 2, 1745, the monks moved to the valley. The complex was restored in the 19th century, and in 1973, Bishop Jolando Nuzzi elevated it to a Diocesan Marian Sanctuary. In recent years, the access ramps have been closed for safety reasons; therefore, the statues are kept in the Cathedral of San Prisco in the Vescovado district, which serves as the starting and ending point for the processions.

The ritual: from Palm Sunday to Easter Tuesday

Tradition marks the festival in precise, unchanging stages. On Palm Sunday, the «descent» takes place: the statues leave via Montalbino and reach the chapel of San Rocco at Casale del Pozzo, where they remain until Easter. On Easter Monday, the procession crosses the foothill districts and the peripheral and central neighborhoods; on Easter Tuesday, the grand city procession takes place, covering a vast urban perimeter and concluding with the return of the statues.

  • Palm Sunday — descent of the statues from the sanctuary to the chapel of San Rocco, on via Federici.
  • Easter Monday — morning celebration and afternoon procession through via Atzori, via Pentapoli, and via Montalbino, with an evening mass in the parish.
  • Easter Tuesday — city procession starting at 8:30 AM, blessing of the animals around 1:00 PM, late afternoon mass, and return candlelight vigil.

The blessing of the animals

Around 1:00 PM on Tuesday, one of the most anticipated moments occurs: the blessing of the animals, a rite that renews the historical bond between Marian devotion and the rural world of the territory. It is not uncommon to see horse-drawn carriages parading, a living memory of a city that long relied on agriculture. The presence of Saint Eligio, patron saint of farriers, gives this moment a special significance.

The Marian candlelight vigil

The farewell is marked by the evening Marian candlelight vigil: after the mass on via Apostolico Montalbino, the procession of candles accompanies the statues back to the Cathedral of San Prisco through the Vescovado district. This image closes the festival and, in the 2026 edition, was introduced as the most significant new addition to the program.

Why it's worth the trip

Visitors will find one of the most authentic expressions of popular religious life in Campania: there is no scenery built for tourism here, but real streets, decorated balconies, and families waiting for the statues to pass by their homes. The festival spans the entire city, from Casale del Pozzo to Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the hamlets at the foot of Monte Albino, involving faithful from neighboring towns in the Agro nocerino-sarnese.

When and where

The festivities are held every year during Easter week, between Palm Sunday and Easter Tuesday, in the municipality of Nocera Inferiore (Campania). Celebrations take place along city streets and at the involved places of worship: the Cathedral of San Prisco, the chapel of San Rocco, the parish of San Giuseppe, and the sanctuary of Monte Albino. Participation is free and open to all.

Madonna dei Miracoli — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Madonna dei Miracoli Festival opened with the descent of the statues from via Montalbino to the chapel of San Rocco on Palm Sunday and concluded on Tuesday, April 7. The heart of the festival took place in the days following Easter: the Easter Monday procession through the neighborhoods, the grand city procession on Tuesday, the blessing of the animals, and—the year's true novelty—the evening Marian candlelight vigil that accompanied the statues back to the Cathedral.

An edition with a novelty: the Marian candlelight vigil

The 2026 program, accompanied by Father Vincenzo Spinelli, alternated liturgical moments of reflection with historical manifestations of popular devotion, extending until April 7. After the descent of the statues of the Madonna and Saints Eligio and Emiddio on Palm Sunday, the community of Nocera Inferiore entered the heart of the festivities in the days immediately following Easter.

Easter Monday, April 6, was marked by the morning celebration presided over by Father Raffaele Ferrentino and an initial afternoon procession through the peripheral and central neighborhoods—via Atzori, via Pentapoli, via Montalbino—concluding with evening mass at the parish of San Giuseppe.

Tuesday, April 7, was the day of the grand city procession, which departed at 8:30 AM over a vast urban perimeter, with the blessing of the animals around 1:00 PM. After the 5:30 PM mass on via Apostolico Montalbino, the Marian candlelight vigil, the year's novelty, began at 6:30 PM, with the return of the statues to the Cathedral of San Prisco through the Vescovado district.
