The patronal feast of Torrette: triduum, solemn mass, and evening procession along the Via Nazionale delle Puglie
In Torrette di Mercogliano, a populous district of the Mercogliano municipality in the province of Avellino, Campania, the solemnity of the Assumption is not celebrated on August 15th. The parish community has long chosen to move its patronal feast to the second half of June, traditionally the third Sunday of the month: a choice that gives the festival a distinct identity compared to the numerous mid-August Marian celebrations in the Irpinia region.
The focal point is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located on Via Nazionale delle Puglie, the religious heart of a district with about 2,500 inhabitants that stretches along the ancient road connecting Avellino to the plains. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Avellino: the feast of the Assumption is, for all intents and purposes, the feast of Torrette.
The celebration is not limited to a single day. In the three days leading up to the solemn Sunday, the parish holds a triduum with a steady rhythm: meditated rosary in the late afternoon, followed by holy mass and prayers to the Assunta. Each evening is dedicated to a specific intention—the sick, the elderly, families—so that spiritual preparation ideally accompanies all ages of the community.
The triduum takes place in a busy June: the days prior also include a mass in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, with the blessing and offering of bread.
The highlight is Sunday. In the morning, a solemn mass is celebrated; in the evening, the statue of the Madonna Assunta leaves the church for a procession that travels along the Via Nazionale delle Puglie and the streets of the district, with scheduled prayer stops along the way.
This is the ritual that gives meaning to the day: the procession moves slowly, accompanied by the hymns and prayers of the faithful, while local activities pause as the statue passes. Upon returning to the church, the community gathers for the traditional Act of Consecration to the Madonna of Torrette, a devotional formula through which the neighborhood renews its entrustment to the Virgin every year.
Every year, the parish extends a specific invitation to families living along the route: to illuminate and decorate balconies and windows to welcome the Madonna. This is the most characteristic aspect of the festival: illuminations, drapes, flowers, and small domestic altars facing the street transform the Via Nazionale into a corridor of light as the evening procession passes.
After the liturgical part, the festival changes tone. In the parish oratory courtyard, a fraternity buffet is set up, open to everyone: a simple, convivial moment, self-managed by volunteers, which for many inhabitants is the annual occasion to gather together.
Mercogliano is known primarily for the Sanctuary of Montevergine, one of the most frequented Marian destinations in Southern Italy, and for the Loreto Abbey Palace. The Torrette festival, however, belongs to a different register: it is neighborhood devotion, without busloads of pilgrims or grand displays, and for this very reason, it reflects how a patronal feast is still lived in the Irpinia region. Those visiting the area in June can combine the evening procession with a trip up to Montevergine, also accessible by funicular, or with a visit to Avellino, just a few kilometers away.
All celebrations—triduum, masses, procession, and the Act of Consecration—are free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required. The program with final times is published every year a few days in advance on the parish website and Facebook page.
The Santa Maria Assunta Parish of Torrette di Mercogliano celebrated its patronal feast from June 18 to 21, 2026, following the custom that places the solemnity of the Assumption in the second half of June rather than in mid-August.
The triduum, spread over three evenings with a meditated rosary at 6:00 PM and holy mass with prayers to the Assunta at 6:30 PM, was dedicated in turn to the sick, the elderly, and families. Sunday featured the 11:00 AM solemn mass and, at 7:30 PM, the procession of the statue of the Madonna Assunta along the Via Nazionale delle Puglie, with prayer stops along the route.
Upon returning to the church, the community gathered for the traditional Act of Consecration to the Madonna of Torrette, followed by a moment of fraternity with a buffet in the oratory courtyard. Numerous families accepted the parish's invitation by illuminating and decorating balconies and windows along the procession route, one of the most recognizable features of this Irpinia festival.
The parish invited families living along the route to illuminate and decorate balconies and windows as a sign of devotion and welcome to the Virgin.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, at Via Nazionale delle Puglie 2-4, in the Torrette di Mercogliano district (83013), in the province of Avellino. The procession travels along the Via Nazionale delle Puglie and the surrounding streets of the district.
By car: take the Avellino Ovest exit from the Avellino-Salerno highway junction or the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Avellino Ovest toll booth), then follow the SS7 bis towards Mercogliano; Torrette is located along the national road, just minutes from the center of Avellino. By train: Avellino station, then use the Air Campania urban and suburban bus lines to Mercogliano and Torrette. Nearest airport: Naples Capodichino, approximately 50 km away.
Participation is free for all celebrations: triduum, solemn mass, procession, and the Act of Consecration. The fraternity buffet in the oratory courtyard is also provided by the parish community.
The procession takes place in the evening: it is advisable to arrive at least half an hour early to find a spot along the Via Nazionale, where traffic is diverted as the procession passes. Parking in the district's streets is limited; it is better to leave your car in the outer areas. Those with a full day available can head up to the Sanctuary of Montevergine in the morning, reachable by car or by funicular from Mercogliano.
