Agira's autumn celebration of the most beloved peasant dish

The Maccheroni with Rabbit Festival is one of the most anticipated culinary events in Agira, a medieval village nestled around Mount Teja in the province of Enna, in the heart of inland Sicily. Recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, Agira provides the perfect backdrop for a celebration that honors a dish deeply rooted in the town's peasant identity: maccheroni topped with rabbit sauce, a recipe from the humble Sicilian kitchen passed down through generations.
The stars of the evening are the maccheroni, prepared according to tradition and accompanied by a rabbit ragù seasoned with herbs and spices. It is a dish dear to the people of Agira and a vital part of the local gastronomic memory that this event aims to promote and preserve. During the festival, the Local Products Center becomes a meeting point where residents and visitors sit together to share the dish in a festive, village-style atmosphere.
Beyond the culinary delights, the evening features music and entertainment, with performances drawing from Sicilian musical traditions. The event is organized by the Circolo Sportivo Agirino, with the patronage of the Municipality of Agira and the support of the local Pro Loco, and takes place in the equipped area of the Local Products Center, chosen to ensure indoor space in case of inclement autumn weather.
The Maccheroni with Rabbit Festival kicks off Agira's autumn season and precedes the famous Cassatella Festival, which celebrates the village's typical pastry. Visiting Agira during this period means combining the pleasure of fine dining with the discovery of a town rich in history: the Royal Abbey of San Filippo (the town's patron saint), the Castle atop Mount Teja, and the Arab quarter of Le Rocche.
The fifth edition of the Maccheroni with Rabbit Festival in Agira is expected for the autumn 2026 season. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced and the detailed program has not been published.
