Nebrodi devotion featuring a procession, Bread Festival, and fireworks
The Feast of Saint Basil the Great is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the San Basilio district, a small hamlet in the municipality of Galati Mamertino, a village perched at an altitude of about 800 meters in the Nebrodi Park, in the province of Messina (Sicily). From here, the view stretches across the Tyrrhenian coast to the Aeolian Islands, in a landscape that provides a natural setting for one of the region's most deeply rooted religious traditions.
Devotion to Saint Basil is renewed twice: on January 2nd, coinciding with the liturgical feast, and on the first Sunday of August, when the largest and most popular celebrations take place. The winter celebration opens with the announcement of the feast, continues with a solemn Holy Mass and the procession of the statue through the streets of the district, accompanied by a marching band, and concludes with music in the church and a festival of local products around a bonfire in Piazza San Basilio.
The summer festival is more elaborate and spans three days, from Saturday through Sunday to Monday. The heart of the celebration is the evocative procession: the statue of the saint is placed on a float decorated with basil branches and artistic wheat sheaves, and carried on shoulders through the ancient streets of the village of San Basilio. Alongside the religious dimension, the Bread Festival allows visitors to taste local bread and typical Nebrodi products, while the air fills with the scent of basil and roasted meat.
The summer program combines the sacred and the popular: traditional games, the characteristic animal raffle, and, to close the festivities, the fireworks display that illuminates the Nebrodi sky. The festival is organized by the Maria SS. Assunta Parish together with the San Basilio Committee and local associations, with the support of the Galati Mamertino municipal administration. It is an occasion that weaves together faith, identity, and hospitality, capable of drawing faithful and emigrants back to the district for the most anticipated event of the summer.
The 2026 summer edition of the Feast of Saint Basil the Great is expected in the San Basilio district, in Galati Mamertino, around the first Sunday of August (Sunday, August 2nd, 2026), with three days of celebrations distributed between Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The detailed calendar with times and guests has not yet been released by the organizers. According to established tradition, the program will include the procession of the statue decorated with basil and wheat through the village streets, the Bread Festival with typical Nebrodi products, traditional games, the animal raffle, and the concluding fireworks display. The festival is managed by the Maria SS. Assunta Parish with the San Basilio Committee and local associations.
