The snail-shaped village illuminated by seven thousand candles on the eve of the Assumption
The Luminara dell'Assunta is one of the most evocative summer events in the Valdera region and one of the oldest traditions of the municipality of Santa Maria a Monte, in the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. It takes place every year on August 14th, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, the town's patron saint, and has roots in a remote past: the 1391 Statute already dedicated an entire chapter to the lighting of candles on the eve, while the first Assumption Fair was documented as early as 1327. It is a living memory, passed down from generation to generation, which still draws thousands of people to the village today.
What makes the Luminara of Santa Maria a Monte unique is its scenography. Approximately seven thousand candles, placed in glass cups and fixed to white wooden frames, are arranged along the facades of the historic center's houses. The small flames trace prayers, geometric motifs, and sacred images on the walls, highlighting the profiles of the buildings and the layout of the characteristic snail-shaped village, which spirals along the ridge of the hill. The lighting begins in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM, when volunteers and residents walk through alleys and stairways to bring to life, light after light, a town entirely enveloped in light.
The religious heart of the evening is the procession, which starts at 9:30 PM from the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Evangelista. The pageant travels through the historic center along Via Carducci, Via delle Grazie, and Piazza della Vittoria, before returning to the starting point. Walking among the candles, in a hushed and silent atmosphere, is an experience that combines devotion, history, and wonder, making this night one of the most beloved by the community.
The Luminara opens the Assumption festivities, which continue in the following days with the historic Fried Potato Festival (Sagra della Patata Fritta), scheduled in Piazza della Vittoria from August 16th to 20th. The star is the Tosca potato, a yellow-fleshed variety and a gastronomic symbol of the territory. Food stalls, music, and convivial moments complete a week that weaves together popular faith, rural tradition, and village celebration.
Visiting Santa Maria a Monte also means discovering a village linked to the poet Giosuรจ Carducci, who lived here as a child, and its Museums of Memory. The Luminara is the ideal opportunity to experience the town in its most poetic guise, when the streets of Valdera transform into a river of light.
The Luminara dell'Assunta 2026 returns to Santa Maria a Monte on Friday, August 14th, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. The historic center is decorated with approximately seven thousand candles placed in glass cups on white wooden frames, which trace prayers and geometric patterns on the facades of the snail-shaped village.
The evening's program follows the established ritual:
