The Contrada San Rocco's signature 'ragù alla castellana' pasta, served among the vegetable gardens and olive groves of Buti.
The Buti Maccherone Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in the town of Buti, a small village perched on the slopes of Monte Pisano in the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. For over two decades, the Contrada San Rocco—one of the districts that brings the famous Palio di Buti to life—has opened its kitchens to share the town's signature dish with residents and visitors alike: handmade pasta served with traditional ragù alla castellana.
The unique feature of this festival is that it spans two different moments of the summer in two distinct locations. The first part is held in the Castello, above the vegetable gardens, in a picturesque setting surrounded by the cultivated plots and olive groves that overlook the village: a rustic, genuine atmosphere where you can dine outdoors amidst the greenery. The second part takes place at Parco Danielli, a larger, well-equipped space with covered seating in case of rain. Both venues offer dinner every evening, with lunch service available on weekends.
The local 'maccherone' is no ordinary pasta: it is a fresh, traditional local specialty served with ragù alla castellana, a recipe passed down through generations. Alongside the star dish, the menu features other Tuscan culinary specialties and local wines, offering a journey through the flavors of the Monte Pisano area and the Pisan countryside.
The festival is much more than just a food event; it is a vibrant expression of the Buti community, organized by the volunteers of the Contrada San Rocco in the spirit of the friendly rivalry of the Palio di Buti, the historic horse race held every year on January 17th in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot. Proceeds from the festival support the district's activities, representing the model of volunteerism and participation that lies at the heart of Tuscan village festivals.
Every evening, in addition to great food, there is live music and outdoor entertainment. Guests dine under the stars in a convivial atmosphere that draws families, groups of friends, and curious visitors from neighboring towns. Admission is free, and the vibe is that of the most genuine and welcoming traditional Tuscan festivals.
The 26th edition of the Buti Maccherone Festival takes place in summer 2026, confirming its traditional double-date formula. The Contrada San Rocco of the Palio di Buti serves its handmade pasta with ragù alla castellana both in the setting of the Castello, above the gardens and olive groves, and at Parco Danielli.
Dinner is served every evening, with lunch available on weekends, and every night is accompanied by live music and entertainment. Admission remains free.
