The medieval historical re-enactment at Castello Lancellotti in Lauro
Lumina in Castro is the historical re-enactment that lights up Castello Lancellotti in Lauro, in the province of Avellino, every year during the last week of August. For three evenings, the Lombard-Norman manor—already mentioned in a document from 976 and rebuilt after the 1799 fire—ceases to be just a historical monument and becomes a living space. Nobles, soldiers, commoners, merchants, and jesters fill the courtyards, staircases, and halls, allowing the public to step directly into the scene.
The concept behind the event is simple yet effective: no front-facing stage, but a journey. Visitors to Lauro don't just watch a show; they walk through it, guided by costumed characters who tell a different story each year.
The first evening begins with the historical pageant, which starts in the lower part of the town and climbs up to Piazza Castello. The Tamburini Castel Lauri drummers, flag-wavers, district representatives, and noble houses march by, each announced by a herald in front of the castle gate. This is the moment most cherished by the local community: the village fills up, windows overlook the procession, and the event takes on the character of a village festival, even before being a philological reconstruction.
Inside the walls, the evening is split between two distinct spaces, each with a different function.
The play of light—torches, candles, and braziers, from which the Latin name Lumina in Castro ("lights in the castle") originates—is an integral part of the set design: the event is designed to be experienced after sunset.
Each edition chooses a theme and an era. Over the years, the stage has featured the stories of the great noble houses that shaped the Vallo di Lauro, the arrival of the Angevins in the Kingdom of Naples, the daily lives of soldiers and commoners, and even the dramatic 1799 fire of the castle, long evoked in the pyrotechnic finale of the early editions. It is the association's way of telling the story of a territory often off the beaten path of Campania tourism: not through a lecture, but through a walking narrative.
Surrounding the performances is the convivial side of the event, with food stalls in Piazza Castello dedicated to local dishes and historically inspired recipes, alongside craft stalls featuring traditional workmanship. This is what ties the evening together and makes the event suitable for families: you can alternate between the dramatized tour, the performances in the first courtyard, and a meal without ever leaving the festival grounds.
Founded in 2006 on the initiative of the Pro Lauro Cultural and Recreational Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Lauro, Lumina in Castro has grown to become one of the most recognizable historical re-enactment events in Irpinia and Campania, and is included in national registers of historical re-enactments. In recent editions, the formula has extended beyond the walls with Lumina in Borgo, bringing installations and entertainment to the streets of the center, particularly along Via Terra. The 2026 event marks the twentieth edition.
Castello Lancellotti is one of the most visited historical residences in Campania, and usually, it can only be admired via daytime guided tours. Lumina in Castro is the only occasion of the year to walk through it at night, illuminated by torches and animated by hundreds of costumed figures: an experience that combines the charm of the location with the dedication of a community that has been staging its own history for twenty years.
Lumina in Castro returns to Castello Lancellotti in Lauro, in the province of Avellino, from August 28th to 30th, 2026. This is the twentieth edition of an event born in 2006 that has become one of the most followed historical re-enactment appointments in Irpinia.
The theme announced for 2026 revolves around courtly love: the itinerant performances are dedicated to the lives and works of the Lords of Vallo di Lauro, following the formula that has distinguished the event for years, where the public does not watch from the outside but walks through the castle alongside costumed characters.
The elements that define the three evenings remain confirmed: the opening historical pageant along the village streets, the free-access performances in the First Courtyard with historical dances, ancient music, flag-wavers, and jesters, the itinerant performance with limited entry in the Second Courtyard, and the food and craft stalls in Piazza Castello.
Precise times, participating groups, and rates for the 20th edition will be released by the Pro Lauro Cultural and Recreational Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
Castello Lancellotti, Piazza Castello, 83023 Lauro (AV), Campania. The castle dominates the town center: it is accessible on foot from the village streets.
By car: take the Nola exit on the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway, then follow the SS 7 bis / SP towards Vallo di Lauro; about 15 minutes from the motorway exit, just over 40 minutes from Naples and Avellino. By train: Nola station on the Circumvesuviana line, then bus or taxi to Lauro. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 40 km away.
During the event evenings, the center of Lauro is affected by the pageant and traffic changes: it is advisable to arrive early and leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village.
In recent editions, access to the First Courtyard is free, while the itinerant dramatized tour in the Second Courtyard requires a 5-euro ticket per person, with limited entry at fixed times.
The route inside the castle includes stairs, cobblestones, and slopes: comfortable shoes are recommended. Evenings start after sunset and continue late; in August, Irpinian evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light layer.
