The Passion of Christ comes to life along the seaside of the fishing village of Aspra
Every year, in the days leading up to Easter, the seaside hamlet of Aspra, in the Municipality of Bagheria (Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily), becomes the natural stage for a Living Via Crucis that attracts faithful and visitors from across the region. The event, which has been held since the 1980s, is now a tradition deeply rooted in the identity of the Aspra community and represents one of the most anticipated appointments of the Holy Week in the Bagheria area.
The re-enactment begins at Piazza Monsignor Cipolla and winds along the village's characteristic seafront. Throughout the route, numerous performers, including faithful and residents of Aspra, interpret with passion and dedication the various stations of Jesus' painful journey: from the condemnation to the ascent to Calvary, up to the crucifixion. The backdrop of the sea and the narrow streets of the fishing village gives the performance a suspended and deeply moving atmosphere, where the sacred and the landscape merge.
The Via Crucis of Aspra is not a show, but a shared act of faith: the entire community gets involved, from taking care of the costumes to preparing the scenes, in a collective effort that involves families, the young, and the elderly. The performance offers participants and spectators a unique opportunity to reflect on the profound meaning of Easter and to relive with emotion the final moments of Christ's life.
The event is organized by the Associazione Culturale Passio Christi, in collaboration with the Parrocchia Maria SS. Addolorata di Aspra, and takes place with the support of the Municipality of Bagheria. Over the years, the event has consolidated its cultural and religious role, becoming a staple in the city's calendar of Easter events.
The 35th edition of the Living Via Crucis of Aspra was held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 8:00 PM, starting from Piazza Monsignor Cipolla and following the route along the seafront of the fishing village.
