The Saint Anne Festival is the most important and deeply felt celebration for the community of Santa Flavia, a town on the Gold Coast in the province of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. Dedicated to Mother Saint Anne, the town's patron saint, the festival takes place in July and culminates on July 26th, the saint's feast day. It is an event that has united religious devotion, folk traditions, and community celebration for generations.

The days of the festival

The celebrations span over two weeks leading up to the solemn feast day. The religious program revolves around the Mother Church of Saint Anne: the unveiling of the statue, the novena, the rosary, and daily masses mark the approach to July 26th. Each morning, the alborate (dawn salutes) and the sound of drummers parading through the streets announce the festival and call the inhabitants to gather.

Saint Anne's Day

July 26th is the heart of the festival. The day begins at dawn with the alborate and continues with the marching band and drummers touring the town; at noon, the masculiata rings out—a spectacular battery of blanks that announces the climax of the day. In the evening, the procession of the Saint Anne statue takes place, winding through the town streets accompanied by confraternities, the band, and thousands of faithful, amidst hymns and prayers. The night concludes with grand fireworks that light up the sky over the gulf.

Tradition and community

Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival offers a rich entertainment program: singing evenings, cabaret shows, activities for children, and musical performances in the square. For the territory of Santa Flavia, overlooking the sea between Solanto and Porticello, devotion to Saint Anne is a deep part of the local identity: in 2026, the Saint Anne Committee was re-established, led by Floriana Zizzo, with the goal of revitalizing the tradition and engaging new generations.
