The neighborhood feast of the Assumption in the Guadagna district of Palermo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Procession of Maria SS. Assunta in Guadagna is one of the most deep-rooted events of popular devotion in Palermo. In the Guadagna district, on the southern outskirts of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, the festival retains a distinctly ancient character, faithful to the model of neighborhood celebrations that were common in all city festivals until fifty years ago. Despite the great process of modernization, the festival keeps its identity intact: a feeling of collective belonging, both intimate and public, centered around the figure of the Madonna Assunta.
The event is organized by the Confraternity of Maria SS. Assunta, founded in 1934 and linked to the church of Maria SS. delle Grazie in Guadagna. The district falls under the parish of San Pio X, on Via Chiavelli. Marian devotion here has deep roots: as early as the 17th century, the Guadagna area was a destination for pilgrimages, and the cult of the Assumption has been promoted and preserved from generation to generation, becoming the identity hub of the entire neighborhood.
Unlike many other Marian processions in the archdiocese, which are tied to August 15th, the Guadagna festival falls on the third Sunday of August. On the day of the celebration, one can feel in the air, in the gestures, and on the faces of everyone, the unmistakable sense of belonging of a neighborhood tied to the Madonna Assunta. Numerous families wait for the passage of the statue from their own streets and decorate their balconies with tablecloths, flowers, and lights as an ancient gesture of welcome and devotion.
The highlight is the long and well-attended procession that winds through the streets of the district along an endless route. The crowd follows the statue of the Madonna until late at night, amidst showers of colorful paper and flowers. The return of the statue is greeted by a fireworks display that, for its duration and spectacle, is considered one of the most important in Palermo. It is the seal on a day of faith and community, in which the Guadagna district gathers around its patroness.
The Procession of Maria SS. Assunta in Guadagna is not just a religious rite, but an authentic heritage of popular traditions in the province of Palermo. It represents a slice of authentic Sicily, where Marian devotion intertwines with neighborhood life, family memory, and the identity of an entire community. For those visiting Palermo in August, attending this festival means coming into contact with the most genuine and popular soul of the city.
The official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Following tradition, the neighborhood festival is expected to take place on the third Sunday of August, with an evening procession and fireworks. The dates and program will be announced by the Confraternity of Maria SS. Assunta in Guadagna closer to the event.
The Guadagna district is located in the southern part of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the ring road (Viale Regione Siciliana) by taking the exit towards Guadagna; the district is served by several AMAT urban bus lines that connect to the city center.
The festival takes place on the third Sunday of August. The procession is held in the afternoon and evening, concluding late at night with fireworks.
Admission is free. It is recommended to arrive early to witness the departure from the church of Maria SS. delle Grazie and to follow the processional route along the decorated streets of the district.
