About Living Via Crucis

The Living Via Crucis of Agropoli brings the Passion of Christ to life amidst the narrow alleys of the old town, in the heart of the Cilento region. The procession departs from the Angioino-Aragonese Castle and winds through arches, stairways, and ancient cobblestones, turning the historic center into an open-air theater. Acting, music, and nocturnal atmospheres guide the audience from the Last Supper to the crucifixion in Piazza Sanseverino, with a second event dedicated to the Resurrection.

The Passion of Christ comes alive in the old town of Agropoli

Every spring, the historic center of Agropoli, in the Province of Salerno, Campania, transforms into a grand open-air theater. The Living Via Crucis is an itinerant sacred performance that stages the final moments of Christ's life along the alleys, arches, and stairways of the medieval village, leading up to the foot of the Angioino-Aragonese Castle. This is not a theatrical performance confined to a stage: the audience walks alongside the actors, station by station, within a setting made of ancient stone, the sea, and the night sky.

From the Castle moat to Piazza Sanseverino

The route begins at the Angioino-Aragonese Castle, the triangular fortress with three circular towers that dominates the highest point of the Agropoli promontory. From here, the procession descends along the narrow streets of the village, passes in front of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and reaches Piazza Sanseverino, where the final scene of the crucifixion is set up.

The main stations follow the Gospel narrative:

  • the Last Supper, set within the spaces of the Castle;
  • the betrayal of Judas and the arrest of Jesus;
  • the trial, staged in front of the parish church;
  • the ascent to Calvary through the alleys of the historic center;
  • the crucifixion in Piazza Sanseverino.

A collaborative project of faith, theater, and community

The event is born from the collaboration between the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul, led by parish priest Don Pasquale Gargione, and the Municipality of Agropoli, with the patronage of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park Authority. In past editions, a central role was also played by the Amici del Centro Storico Association, which in 2019 managed the organization together with the parish and the municipal administration. The artistic direction for the 2026 edition is entrusted to Antonio Speranza and Melissa Di Matteo.

There are no professional actors on stage, but dozens of local volunteers of all ages: this is what makes the Living Via Crucis a moment of collective identity, rather than a simple tourist attraction.

The return of an awaited tradition

After years of absence, the performance returned in 2026 with the title «The Night, the Trial, the Cross - Condemned to Save», drawing thousands of people along the route. The format was split into two events: the first dedicated to the Passion, the second to the Resurrection, thus closing the story with a message of hope.

Why it is worth the trip to Cilento

Agropoli is the gateway to the Cilento region, and its old town, perched on a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, is one of the most evocative on the Campanian coast. Seeing it at night, illuminated only by stage lights with the sound of the sea in the background, is a very different experience from the summer season. The Living Via Crucis is also part of a network of Passion plays spread throughout the Cilento during Lent and Holy Week: many visitors follow more than one in the same period, moving between the inland villages and those on the coast.

Tips for attending the performance

The old town can only be reached on foot: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots in the lower part of the city and walk up at a leisurely pace. The streets are narrow and steep, with stairways and cobblestones, so comfortable shoes are essential. Those who want to follow all the scenes closely should arrive at least half an hour before the start, as the best spots along the route fill up very quickly.

Living Via Crucis — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Living Via Crucis of Agropoli, titled «The Night, the Trial, the Cross - Condemned to Save», took place in two events: Saturday, March 28 with the Passion and Saturday, April 11 with the Resurrection. Departure at 6:30 PM from the Angioino-Aragonese Castle, artistic direction by Antonio Speranza and Melissa Di Matteo, with thousands of spectators along the alleys of the old town.

The awaited return of the Living Via Crucis

The 2026 edition marked the return of the Living Via Crucis to the old town of Agropoli after years of waiting. The historic center, with its arches and stone stairways, transformed into Golgotha: local press reported that thousands of people followed the procession from the moat of the Angioino-Aragonese Castle to Piazza Sanseverino, where the crucifixion scene was set up.

The direction of Antonio Speranza and Melissa Di Matteo focused on an emotional and immersive journey, with nocturnal atmospheres, musical accompaniment, and high-impact scenes like the trial of Jesus in front of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The second event on April 11 completed the story with the Resurrection, closing on a message of hope. A result that, according to the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul and parish priest Don Pasquale Gargione, exceeded expectations.
