The Cilento village reopens its ancient doors to flavors, folk music, and local crafts
Perdifumo Open Doors was born from a simple and highly effective idea: to literally open the town's doors. The ancient portals of the historic center's homes, once belonging to local noble families, are reopened for two (and from 2026, three) evenings, transforming them into spaces for gathering, exhibition, and discovery. Behind every threshold, you will find art exhibits, craft stalls, glimpses of daily village life, and tastings of Cilento cuisine. It is a direct way to showcase the preservation of historical beauty in a town that would otherwise remain off the beaten tourist path of the coast.
Perdifumo is a small municipality in the province of Salerno, in Campania, nestled in the inland hills of Cilento, just a few kilometers from the sea at Castellabate and Agropoli. The historic center is a maze of slopes, narrow alleys, and sudden open spaces that become natural stages during the festival nights. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Perdifumo and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, of which the territory is a part: a context that highlights the event's focus on local products and the environmental dimension of the village.
The food stalls are the delicious heart of the event. The route offers traditional Cilento peasant dishes, cooked by volunteers and served along the way:
After sunset, the evenings come alive with folk music groups: the Cilento tarantella, tammorre drums, and traditional songs accompany the audience in the early part of the evening, while later on, the rhythm shifts and DJ sets keep the party going for a younger crowd. Between one alley and another, you will encounter street performers, jugglers, and roaming acts, while inside the open doors, artisans demonstrate traditional crafts. It is a formula that works because it doesn't concentrate everything in a single square: you walk, climb, and descend, and the show changes at every corner.
Historically set for August 17th and 18th, so much so that the official event page carries that reference in its name, Perdifumo Open Doors has established itself over the years as one of the most anticipated events of the Cilento summer. In 2026, the main novelty is the addition of a third day, August 19th, dedicated to theater: a sign of the Pro Loco's desire to expand the cultural offering without distorting the popular identity of the festival.
Those arriving in Cilento in summer usually find only sea and coastal clubs. Perdifumo Open Doors offers the other side of the territory: that of inland villages, stone houses, home cooking, and a community that puts itself out there to tell its story. Admission is free and the atmosphere is that of a rare, authentic festival created by the village for anyone who wants to explore it on foot.
The event organized by the Pro Loco Perdifumo e Frazioni, with the patronage of the Municipality of Perdifumo and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, returns from August 17 to 19, 2026. For the first time in its history, the event exceeds the two traditional evenings of August 17 and 18 and adds a third day.
The format remains the one that has made Perdifumo Open Doors one of the most anticipated events in inland Cilento: from 7:00 PM, the town comes alive among alleys, squares, and ancient residences, with an itinerary that combines the authentic flavors of Cilento cuisine, stalls dedicated to gastronomic excellence, roaming performances, artistic crafts, and the atmosphere that only a historic village can offer.
August 19 expands the event with an appointment entirely dedicated to live performance, while the food stalls remain active throughout the evening.
From 7:00 PM: opening of the ancient doors of the historic center with art exhibitions and local crafts, food stall route with traditional Cilento dishes (cicciata, lagane and chickpeas, pasta and potatoes with provola, cavatelli, ziti with wild boar ragù, homemade desserts). During the evenings, folk music groups and Cilento tarantella, street performers, and roaming acts alternate in the alleys, with DJ sets in the second part of the night.
The detailed program for the first two evenings will be released by the Pro Loco on official channels in the days preceding the event.
By car: Take the Battipaglia exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then the SS18 towards Agropoli and provincial roads towards Perdifumo (about 90 km from Salerno). From the Cilento coast, it takes about twenty minutes from Castellabate or Agropoli.
By train: Agropoli-Castellabate station on the Tyrrhenian line, then bus or taxi inland.
By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport or Naples Capodichino.
The event comes to life starting at 7:00 PM and continues until late at night. Admission is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.
