About Living Passion

Every year, around Palm Sunday, the streets of the historic center of Santa Margherita di Belice transform into a vast open-air stage. Hundreds of actors in period costumes bring the Living Passion of Christ to life, a sacred itinerant performance that retraces the final days of Jesus' life, from his entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion and resurrection. Organized by the Il Sale della Terra association, it is one of the most deeply felt and well-attended events for the local community in the province of Agrigento.

A sacred performance in the heart of the Belice Valley

The Living Passion of Christ is one of the most anticipated religious and cultural events in Santa Margherita di Belice, a town in the province of Agrigento nestled in the Belice Valley, Sicily. Every year, in the days leading up to Holy Week, the town's historic center turns into a grand open-air theater where faith, tradition, and art merge in an itinerant dramatization of great emotional impact.

History and tradition

Established in 2009 through the initiative of the local church community and a group of passionate volunteers, the event has grown over time to become a staple of the local Lenten calendar. It is currently organized by the Il Sale della Terra cultural and religious association, with the support of the Municipality of Santa Margherita di Belice and the collaboration of the local parish. Over the years, the performance has only been interrupted during the pandemic and on exceptional occasions, confirming the strong bond between the event and the local identity.

The dramatization

Along a picturesque route that winds through the squares and alleys of the historic center, over a hundred actors in period costumes re-enact the final moments of Christ's life. The scenes unfold in sequence, from the triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper, from the trial before Pontius Pilate to the Via Crucis, leading up to the crucifixion and the announcement of the resurrection. Main squares, such as Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Emanuela Loi, serve as the backdrop for the most pivotal moments of the narrative.

A choral community event

The strength of the Living Passion lies in collective participation: actors, extras, costume designers, technicians, and volunteers of all ages work together for months to prepare the performance. It is not merely a theatrical show, but a moment of profound sharing, contemplation, and collective beauty, telling a story of suffering and sacrifice, but also of hope, rebirth, and the unbreakable bond between a land and its people.
