The Nativity among ancient crafts in the heart of Vittoria
During the Christmas season, the Santa Maria Goretti Parish in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, transforms into a small corner of Bethlehem. The Living Nativity organized by the parish committee has become a staple of the Vittoria Christmas: in the spacious areas behind the church on Via Pietro Gentile, a re-enactment comes to life, blending faith, popular tradition, and the participation of the entire community.
The staging meticulously reconstructs Palestine at the time of Jesus, with detailed sets, period costumes, and environments that transport visitors back to the daily life of villages from over two thousand years ago. The path winds through artisan workshops and ancient Arab and Hebrew trades, scenes of daily life, and symbolic locations, leading to the Nativity grotto, the spiritual and scenic heart of the entire representation.
On the main evenings, a group of parishioners stages the sacred Nativity performance, narrating the Gospel of the birth of Jesus with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus. The most anticipated moment is the arrival of the Three Wise Men on horseback, which concludes the event on Epiphany, providing one of the most moving images of the entire celebration.
Born as a parish community initiative, the Santa Maria Goretti living nativity has established itself year after year as a reference point for experiencing the mystery of Christmas in Vittoria and the neighboring towns of the Ragusa area. Preparation involves dozens of volunteers for months, in a collective effort that testifies to the neighborhood's strong bond with this tradition. The event attracts visitors from all over south-eastern Sicily, helping to enliven the local Christmas festivities.
The tenth edition of the Living Nativity of the Santa Maria Goretti Parish in Vittoria was held from December 25, 2025, to January 6, 2026. The staging aimed to faithfully reconstruct Palestine at the time of Jesus, with detailed sets, period costumes, and environments that transported visitors back to the daily life of two thousand years ago.
The sacred Nativity performance took place at 8:00 PM on the evenings of December 25, January 1, and January 6. On other dates (December 26, 27, 28, and January 4), the route remained open for free visits from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, among workshops, ancient trades, and the Nativity grotto. On the day of the Epiphany, the arrival of the Three Wise Men on horseback sealed the journey. At the end, a tasting of traditional local products was offered.
