About La Stella d'Oriente

In the heart of the Dente district, also known as the Quartiere d'Oriente, the Sant'Anna Parish of Modica brings the 'La Stella d'Oriente' living nativity to life. This immersive representation transforms streets, courtyards, and community spaces into a vast, sprawling nativity scene. Featuring performers in period costumes, ancient crafts, and scenes of the Nativity, the route takes visitors on a journey of tradition, spirituality, and atmosphere, culminating in the arrival of the Three Wise Men on Epiphany. A deeply felt Christmas tradition in this Baroque city in the province of Ragusa.

A living nativity in the heart of the Dente district

Every year, through the narrow streets of the Dente districtโ€”the historic quarter of Modica also known as the Quartiere d'Orienteโ€”'La Stella d'Oriente' comes to life, a living nativity organized by the Sant'Anna Parish. The event turns the neighborhood into a true piece of immersive theater: alleys, courtyards, and parish spaces become the stage where performers, dressed in period attire, bring the Nativity and the ancient trades of the past back to life.

Immersive theater

'La Stella d'Oriente' is not a static display, but an emotional journey that unfolds through multiple living tableaux. The scenes develop within the church grounds and the courtyard of the Istituto Boccone del Povero, transformed into a stage for emotion, history, and spirituality. Visitors are guided along a path that culminates in scenes of intense religious depth, where the Christmas message intertwines with reflections on peace and faith.

Tradition and community

The living nativity is the result of the passionate work of parish volunteers, the Dammusa Cultural Association, and the Sant'Anna bearers' committee. Dozens of local residents and parishioners take part as performers and artisans, reconstructing workshops, hearths, and scenes of daily life. The initiative strengthens the sense of belonging in the Dente district and stands as one of the most anticipated Christmas events for the Modica community.

Modica, city of the Baroque

The event is part of the rich Christmas calendar of the Municipality of Modica, a city in the province of Ragusa famous for its Baroque historic centerโ€”a UNESCO World Heritage siteโ€”and its renowned chocolate. Visiting 'La Stella d'Oriente' means discovering an authentic, popular corner of the city, away from the main tourist circuits, and immersing yourself in an atmosphere of yesteryear amidst the scenery of the Quartiere d'Oriente.

When it takes place

The living nativity is held during the Christmas season, traditionally between late December and early January, with a highlight on Epiphany (January 6th), when the Three Wise Men reach the Nativity hut. The exact dates are announced annually by the parish.
