The 'A Bamminedda festival in the Iblean village of Monterosso Almo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Maria Santissima Bambina Festival is one of the most cherished religious observances in Monterosso Almo, a charming village in the Iblean Mountains located at an altitude of approximately 690 meters in the heart of the province of Ragusa, Sicily. Known to the locals by the affectionate dialect name 'A Bamminedda, the festival celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary and traditionally marks the end of the village's summer religious calendar, following the feasts of Saint John the Baptist and Maria Santissima Addolorata.
Included in the Borghi più Belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) circuit, Monterosso Almo is the northernmost municipality in the province of Ragusa. It boasts a fascinating historic center dominated by the scenic Piazza San Giovanni, known locally as u chianu. Overlooking this square are the Church of Saint John the Baptist, perched at the top of a wide staircase, and the Church of Saint Anne, which traditionally houses the statue of Maria Santissima Bambina. The festival offers a perfect opportunity to explore the Baroque architecture and authentic atmosphere of this corner of the Iblean Mountains.
The festivities span a full week and follow a long-standing tradition:
Alongside the religious observances, the festival offers evening entertainment open to all in Piazza Rimembranza, featuring concerts, musical performances, and DJ sets organized in collaboration with the municipal administration. The goal is to strengthen local bonds in a festive atmosphere that brings together families, young people, and visitors.
The Maria Santissima Bambina Festival represents a moment of strong identity for Monterosso Almo: popular devotion, rituals passed down through generations, and conviviality merge in one of the most anticipated events of the year. For those visiting the province of Ragusa, it is the ideal occasion to experience the authenticity of a Sicilian patronal feast, far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Maria Santissima Bambina Festival in Monterosso Almo does not yet have official dates. As per tradition, the 'A Bamminedda celebrations are expected to be concentrated in the first days of October, with the solemn day on the first Sunday of the month. The detailed program (novena, processions of the statue, fireworks display, and musical evenings in Piazza Rimembranza) will be published by the organizing committee closer to the event.
Monterosso Almo can be reached by car via the SS194 and the provincial roads connecting Ragusa, Vizzini, and Giarratana. The nearest airport is Comiso (approx. 40 km), while Catania-Fontanarossa is just over an hour away.
Religious celebrations are concentrated in the historic center, between the Church of Saint John the Baptist, the Church of Saint Anne, and Piazza San Giovanni; musical performances take place in Piazza Rimembranza.
Access to all religious celebrations and public events is free.
We recommend combining your visit to the festival with a stroll through the village—one of Italy's most beautiful—and discovering the Baroque churches in the historic center.
