The Nativity comes to life among the rock caves of Cava d'Ispica
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ispica Living Nativity is one of the most significant and evocative Christmas events in southeastern Sicily. Every year during the holiday season, the small town of Ispica in the province of Ragusa transforms into a vast open-air stage: the performance winds through the rock caves of Cava d'Ispica, located in the Parco Forza archaeological areaโa natural setting carved into the rock that is worth the trip in itself.
Visitors walk along a route of approximately 1.5 kilometers, traversing characteristic rocky paths, cave churches, and ancient dwellings hewn from stone. Along the way, over one hundred performers in period costumes bring to life numerous tableaux that reconstruct the daily life of the past: harvesters, artisans, bakers, travelers, and storytellers revive the trades and customs of the Iblean rural civilization.
Considered one of the most visited living nativity scenes in Sicily, the event attracts thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond every year. The setting of Cava d'Ispica, with its archaeological sites, caves, and ancient workshops, provides a magical and deeply evocative atmosphere where the reenactment of the birth of Baby Jesus intertwines with the historical and cultural identity of the territory.
The event is organized by the PromoEventi association in collaboration with Pro Loco Spaccaforno, with the support of the Municipality of Ispica, the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa, the Sicilian Region, and GAL Terra Barocca. The living nativity confirms itself every year as a major tourist attraction for Ispica and the entire Iblean territory in Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Ispica Living Nativity is expected, as per tradition, during the Christmas period, between late December 2026 and Epiphany 2027, in the rocky setting of Cava d'Ispica. Dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official by the organizers. The usual format is expected, featuring over a hundred costumed performers, living tableaux, and the reenactment of the Nativity along the path through the caves. For dates, times, and entry procedures, please refer to the official communications from the PromoEventi association and the Pro Loco Spaccaforno.
