The Costa Tramontana lemon takes center stage in Capo d'Orlando
In the heart of the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Messina, the town of Capo d'Orlando dedicates an annual festival to its most iconic product: the Costa Tramontana lemon. Limun'aria – Lemon Festival is a food and wine event that turns Piazza Matteotti into the picturesque Villaggio dei Limoni, a pedestrian path filled with stalls, scents, and citrus flavors in the heart of this Sicilian town.
The festival celebrates a prized variety that defined the area's economic history, particularly between the 1950s and 1980s, when citrus exports were a primary source of income for Capo d'Orlando. Limun'aria was created to rediscover and promote this agricultural heritage, bringing the bond between the community and its land back to the forefront. The Costa Tramontana lemon, renowned for its quality, is the common thread throughout the event.
The program features free tastings of lemon-based products: granitas, pastries, arancini, and organic juices distributed to the public. There is no shortage of showcooking and culinary workshops, featuring the preparation of local specialties such as pennette and lemon risotto, arancini, and traditional desserts. A significant role is played by local schools, with students from the Hotel Management Institute involved in gastronomic demonstrations.
Evenings are brought to life by live music from local bands and folk groups, as well as the tradition of cantastorie (storytellers), who accompany visitors through the town center. The festival also hosts thematic conferences dedicated to the use of lemon in cooking and the promotion of local citrus farming, including a historical meeting dedicated to the epic story of Capo d'Orlando's lemons.
Organized by the Pro Loco Orlandina in collaboration with the Municipality, Limun'aria is above all a community celebration: the free distribution of hundreds of kilos of organic lemons and the participation of local businesses and producers testify to the collective commitment to enhancing local resources. For those visiting Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Riviera of Messina in particular, it is an authentic opportunity to discover the flavors and traditions of Capo d'Orlando.
The 2026 edition of Limun'aria took place in Capo d'Orlando from May 30 to June 2, with evening openings from 6:00 PM in Piazza Matteotti, transformed into the Villaggio dei Limoni. The program alternated between tastings of granitas and lemon products, distribution of organic lemons and juices, showcooking with specialties like arancini and lemon risotto, and entertainment with storytellers and musical bands.
Highlights included concerts by local bands and a conference dedicated to the local citrus history, confirming the bond between the festival and the identity of Capo d'Orlando. The event, with free access, was organized by the Pro Loco Orlandina with the support of the Municipality.
