The Atessa festival celebrating goat meatballs and goat cheese in Piazza Garibaldi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Li Pallòtte di Cròpe Festival is one of the most cherished summer food festivals in Atessa, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every year, in the setting of Piazza Garibaldi, the event celebrates pallòtte di cròpe—meatballs prepared with goat meat, an ancient and typical dish of Atessa's cuisine—accompanied by goat cheese and other local specialties.
Pallòtte di cròpe originate from the farming and pastoral culture of the Val di Sangro: these are meatballs made from goat meat, traditionally sourced from less noble cuts and seasoned according to recipes passed down through generations. A humble yet authentic dish, it has now become a symbol of the gastronomic identity of the town of Atessa, rediscovered thanks to this festival. Alongside the meatballs, visitors can taste goat cheese and other typical Abruzzese products, available for dining on-site or for takeaway.
The festival is more than just a food and wine event: food stands open in the evening, and the square transforms into a festive space with live musical entertainment, performances by local groups, and comedy acts. In past editions, the event has hosted local bands and comedians, drawing both residents and visitors from neighboring towns and turning the historic center of Atessa into a meeting point during the Ferragosto holiday period.
The festival is promoted by the Ate-Tixe Studium Cultural Association, an organization active in Atessa since 1980 dedicated to promoting arts, folk traditions, and the local dialect, also through the Museum of Ancient Arts and Traditions and a dialect theater school. Thanks to the association's work, along with the support of the Municipality of Atessa, pallòtte di cròpe have returned to the forefront of village life as part of a rich summer calendar that enlivens Atessa between July and August.
Atessa is one of the most characteristic villages in the Chieti hinterland, overlooking the Val di Sangro and just a few kilometers from the Costa dei Trabocchi. Its historic center, filled with narrow alleys, churches, and picturesque views, provides the backdrop for numerous festivals and fairs that recount the identity and traditions of the Abruzzese community throughout the summer. The Li Pallòtte di Cròpe Festival is one of the most authentic among them, offering a chance to rediscover the flavors of local cuisine in a festive, popular atmosphere.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Li Pallòtte di Cròpe Festival have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to return to Atessa in August, in Piazza Garibaldi, featuring traditional goat meatballs, goat cheese, and musical entertainment. The detailed program will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
The festival takes place in Piazza Garibaldi, in the historic center of Atessa (CH), Abruzzo.
By car: Take the Val di Sangro exit on the A14 motorway, then follow signs for Atessa. By train: The reference station is on the Adriatic line, with onward travel by bus toward the hinterland.
Food stands open in the evening, generally from 8:00 PM. Admission to the festival area is free; you only pay for what you consume at the stands.
Information is available through the Ate-Tixe Studium Cultural Association and the Municipality of Atessa.
