Papier-mâché floats, costumed groups, and street parties in the heart of Lentini
The Lentini Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Lentini, a town in the province of Syracuse in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. For a day, the town center fills with color, masks, and music: the event, organized by the Municipality of Lentini, attracts families, children, and curious visitors from across the Piana di Catania and the Syracuse area.
The heart of the festival is the parade of papier-mâché floats, crafted with great artisanal care by local groups, schools, and associations. Alongside the floats, costumed groups parade, accompanied by roaming music, choreography, and group dances that involve the public along the entire route. The procession winds through the city center to reach the main squares, Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Duomo, where the festivities are concentrated.
The Lentini Carnival is designed to be enjoyed by everyone, with special attention given to the little ones. Throughout the day, a children's area is set up with inflatables, entertainment, baby dance, face painting, mask-making workshops, and mascot meet-and-greets. There is also a food area, offering cotton candy, popcorn, and traditional Sicilian carnival sweets.
In the evening, the main square hosts the award ceremony, where commemorative plaques are presented to the costumed groups, schools, and associations that brought the parade to life. The party continues with live musical performances, entertainment by the Crystal Band Cartoon, and DJ sets that keep the crowd dancing until late at night.
An authentic expression of popular traditions and local folklore, the Lentini Carnival represents a moment of strong community bonding for the people of Lentini. The free nature of the event and its intimate, local atmosphere make it one of the most vibrant occasions to discover the Sicilian carnival scene away from the major tourist flows.
The 2026 edition of the Lentini Carnival brought Lentini to life with a rich program spread across several points of the city, from Villa Gorgia to the Scala Alaimo playground, and from Piazza della Resistenza to the streets of the center. The highlight was Tuesday, February 17.
The parade started at 5:00 PM with papier-mâché floats, costumed groups, schools, and associations, accompanied by roaming music and choreography, arriving in Piazza Umberto I / Piazza Duomo around 7:45 PM. Following this, there was a food area with free cotton candy and popcorn, a play area with inflatables for children, a ceremony presenting commemorative plaques to the groups and schools, live performances, entertainment by the Crystal Band Cartoon, and DJ sets that closed the festivities.
The parade travels through the streets of Lentini (SR) and culminates in Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Duomo. Entertainment points are also located at Villa Gorgia, the Scala Alaimo playground, and Piazza della Resistenza.
By car, Lentini can be reached via the A18 Catania-Syracuse motorway (Lentini exit) and the SS114. By train, the Lentini station is served by the Catania-Syracuse line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, approximately 40 km away.
Admission to the event and the parade is free. The children's inflatables and some tastings (cotton candy and popcorn) are also free.
Arrive in the early afternoon to catch the start of the parade; comfortable clothing and masks for children are recommended.
