About Le Vie dell'Angelo

Every summer, the village of Sant'Angelo all'Esca in Irpinia opens its doors for Le Vie dell'Angelo, a food, wine, and cultural event promoted by the local Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality. It features a guided walk through the village's alleys, churches, and cellars, including tastings of local Taurasi wines and an aperitif at the wineries. In the evening, the festivities move to Piazza Dante with food stalls and the warm conviviality typical of local village festivals.

Le Vie dell'Angelo: an Irpinian village opens its doors to visitors

Le Vie dell'Angelo is the premier food, wine, and cultural event in Sant'Angelo all'Esca, a small town of just under seven hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 451 meters in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania. The event is promoted by the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo all'Esca and follows a simple, successful formula: for one day, the village becomes a walking route to explore through alleys, churches, scenic spots, and cellars.

A guided walk through alleys and cellars

The heart of the event is the guided tour that starts from the town center, Piazza Dante, and leads participants to discover the local excellence. In recent editions, the route has included two of the town's most renowned wineries, Tenuta Cavalier Pepe and Cantine Russo, with stops dedicated to tasting local wines and an aperitif included in the participation fee. It is the most direct way to understand how vineyards are managed in this part of Irpinia and to connect the landscape to what ends up in your glass.

Evenings in Piazza Dante

Upon returning from the walk, the festivities concentrate back in Piazza Dante, where food and wine stalls are set up featuring traditional local dishes and products. The square, overlooked by the church of San Rocco, becomes the evening's living room: long tables, lively conversation, and the conviviality that characterizes Irpinian village festivals, with the entire community involved in the organization.

In the land of Taurasi

Sant'Angelo all'Esca is located within the production area of Taurasi DOCG, the great red wine made from Aglianico grapes that has made this corner of Irpinia along the Calore Valley famous. Vineyards, olive groves, and woods surround the town, and neighboring municipalities like Taurasi and Fontanarosa form one of the most interesting wine routes in Campania. Participating in Le Vie dell'Angelo means entering this world through the front door, guided by the producers and the locals themselves.

What to see along the route

  • Church of San Michele Arcangelo, on Via Borgo Chiesa: the parish church, dedicated to the town's patron saint since 1716.
  • Church of San Rocco, overlooking the central Piazza Dante, the event's meeting point.
  • Church of the Madonna del Carmine, at the entrance to the town, in the Taverna area.
  • The Belvedere, a panoramic terrace overlooking the Irpinian hills, recently renovated and perfect for an evening stroll.
  • The Hunting Lodge (Casino di Caccia), built in 1808 and today a destination for walks in the countryside surrounding the village.

An event born from the community

Le Vie dell'Angelo is a young event: the third edition took place on Saturday, June 28, 2025. In just a few years, it has become one of the highlights of the village's summer, alongside the patronal feast of San Michele Arcangelo on September 29 and the winter Sagra del Pastiero, featuring large baked pasta cooked in a traditional copper cauldron. The format remains intentionally village-sized: everything on foot, a symbolic registration fee, and no intrusive structures on the town center streets.

The 2026 edition

At the moment, the Pro Loco has not yet released the official date for the 2026 edition: previous editions have been held in June, and the announcement usually arrives a few weeks in advance through the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Sant'Angelo all'Esca. Those wishing to participate should keep an eye on them: in 2025, the walk cost 10 euros, including tastings and an aperitif, while the evening in the square was open to everyone.

Le Vie dell'Angelo — edition 2026

For 2026, Le Vie dell'Angelo does not yet have an official date. The event, which reached its third edition in 2025, has always taken place in June, and the Pro Loco of Sant'Angelo all'Esca usually announces the details a few weeks in advance. The expected format remains the well-tested one: a guided walk through the village with visits to cellars, tastings of Irpinian wines, and an evening with food stalls in Piazza Dante.
