It is here, at Cascina Capanna in Val Grue, that Birrificio Montegioco has been organizing Le Birre della Merla since January 2008, making it one of the most intriguing and beloved winter festivals in the Piedmontese brewing landscape.

A tradition hardened by the cold

The concept is as simple as it is counter-current: to celebrate beer during the harshest days of the year, with outdoor service under a large marquee and, for those who prefer to avoid the chill, spacious, well-heated indoor rooms. Brewer Riccardo Franzosi presents his own bold, winter-inspired creations alongside those of guest breweries, creating an informal and convivial atmosphere that has turned this event into a cult classic.

Beers, tokens, and Piedmontese cuisine

One of the event's unique features is its payment system: beers and food are purchased exclusively using Merli, tokens that can be exchanged at the cash desk. The menu is perfectly suited to the season, featuring hearty dishes designed to combat the cold: from traditional Piedmontese agnolotti to richer offerings like pulled pork, ribs, beer-infused sausage, fried tripe, and Venetian-style liver with polenta.
