The medieval re-enactment in the castle of Oltrepò Pavese
Perched among the hills of Oltrepò Pavese, in the Province of Pavia, the village of Montesegale is dominated by its picturesque medieval castle. It is here that every year, on the last Sunday of September, the San Damiano Fair takes place, one of the most beloved historical re-enactments in the area, reaching its 33rd edition in 2026 after its debut in 1994.
The heart of the event is the historical re-enactment held within the castle grounds, with scenes of medieval life recreated based on historical documents. The highlight is the investiture ceremony of Count Gambarana, which recounts the recovery of the fief by the noble family. Numerous costumed figures and historical groups animate the day, recreating the atmosphere of a bygone era.
The fair is a continuous spectacle: dances, songs, challenges, and skill competitions mark the day, with performances by jesters, crossbowmen, and swordsmen. An ancient medieval market winds through the village streets, where you can buy typical local products and taste local specialties, including the unmissable tastings of Salame di Varzi DOP and De.Co. products.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Montesegale, the San Damiano Fair combines history, culture, and flavors of Oltrepò in a free-entry event. The castle, the true protagonist and natural stage for the event, serves as the backdrop for a day that takes visitors back through the centuries, enhancing the historical and gastronomic heritage of this corner of Lombardy.
The 2026 edition of the San Damiano Fair, the 33rd, takes place in Montesegale on Sunday, September 27th. Within the medieval castle, the historical re-enactment unfolds with the investiture ceremony of Count Gambarana, animated by costumed figures and historical groups. Along the village streets, the medieval market offers local products and tastings of Salame di Varzi DOP. Free admission.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Pro Loco of Montesegale. Based on recent editions, the day includes:
