Truffles, wines, and tradition in one of Italy's most beautiful villages
The Truffle Day and Patronal Feast of Fortunago is one of the most anticipated food and wine events of autumn in the Municipality of Fortunago, in the province of Pavia, in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese. The event, held in September (usually on the third Sunday), combines the celebration of the prized local truffle — recognized with the municipal designation of origin (De.Co.) — with the patronal feast of Saints Maria and San Giorgio.
The day's program is rich and varied. It opens with a mass in the 17th-century church of Santa Maria e San Giorgio, followed by a presentation by an expert on truffles from the area, illustrating cultivation and harvesting techniques. The trifolau (truffle hunters) demonstrate their dogs' skill in finding truffles, in demonstrations that fascinate both adults and children.
The absolute star is the table: Chef Danilo leads a gastronomic journey featuring truffle dishes paired with DOC wines from Oltrepò Pavese. Along the village streets, local producers offer truffles, mushrooms, wines, cured meats, cheeses, and local produce. The village restaurants offer special truffle menus by reservation, for a complete food and wine experience.
Awarded the recognition of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Fortunago enchants with its cobbled streets, flower-adorned stone houses, and views of the Oltrepò hills. Truffle Day best showcases this heritage, combining the architectural beauty of the medieval village with the authentic flavors of one of the most renowned areas in the province of Pavia. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the excellence of Oltrepò truffles and the genuine soul of this corner of Lombardy.
In September 2026, Fortunago renews the Truffle Day along with the patronal feast of Saints Maria and San Giorgio. The day, expected on the third Sunday of the month, offers mass in the 17th-century church, a presentation by an expert on local truffles, truffle hunting demonstrations with dogs, a gastronomic journey featuring truffle dishes paired with DOC wines from Oltrepò Pavese, and a market of local products. The precise date will be confirmed by the Pro Loco closer to the event.
The usual structure of the day includes: 10:00 AM mass in the church of Santa Maria e San Giorgio; 10:50 AM presentation by an expert on local white and black truffles, with illustration of cultivation and harvesting; hunting demonstrations with dogs by the trifolau; gastronomic truffle journey curated by Chef Danilo, paired with Oltrepò DOC wines; market of truffles, mushrooms, wines, cured meats, cheeses, and local produce along the village streets. Restaurants offer special truffle menus by reservation. Detailed program and times for 2026 will be published closer to the event.
