Alto Sannio Laticauda lamb at the Court of the Lombard Walls in Arpaia
The Laticauda Breed Local Lamb Festival is the summer event that defines the identity of Arpaia, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants nestled in the Caudina Valley, on the extreme western border of the Province of Benevento, in Campania. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Arpaia Caudium, which brings together local volunteers, farmers, and cooks around a product that here is not just a culinary trend but a piece of agricultural history: the Laticauda lamb from the Alto Sannio.
The festival's journey has been long but not always continuous: the thirteenth edition took place in August 2018, the fourteenth on August 3rd and 4th, 2024, and the fifteenth on July 25th and 26th, 2026. Each return of the event, after the interruptions of recent years, becomes a small collective celebration for the whole town, much more deeply felt than a simple gastronomic evening.
The heart of the festival is the square that opens at the foot of the ancient Lombard walls, in the Corte area, along Via Corte. Arpaia still preserves the Lombard-era defensive walls of its ancient village, and this stone backdrop gives the evenings a character that few village festivals can offer: tables and grills set up in front of a medieval fortification, with the silhouette of the Caudina mountains in the background. The Municipality of Arpaia stands, after all, on a historic passage between inland Campania and the Neapolitan area, in that Caudina Valley made famous by the events of the Caudine Forks.
The festival menu has remained faithful to itself over the editions and revolves entirely around lamb, offered in two cooking styles: grilled and oven-baked.
The stands are managed by Pro Loco volunteers: portions are generous, the service is the simple and direct style of village festivals, and prices remain the popular ones typical of these events.
The Laticauda is the native sheep breed that has marked the pastures and hills of the Alto Sannio for centuries, and the Arpaia festival was created precisely to introduce it to a wider audience. Bringing to the table a lamb raised just a few kilometers from the town, in a very short supply chain, is the explicit message of the event: not just any dish, but the result of a pastoral tradition that would otherwise risk disappearing. For a visitor arriving from outside the region, it is the most direct opportunity to understand why the Sannio claims a cuisine distinct from that of the Neapolitan coast.
The evenings are not just about gastronomy. Accompanying the dinner are light and folk music groups, with a repertoire that draws heavily from classic Neapolitan and Campanian folklore. The atmosphere is that of a true village feast: entire families at the tables, groups of friends arriving from the neighboring towns of the Caudina Valley and the area of Airola and Sant'Agata de' Goti, and children running between the walls.
Historically, the festival occupied the first days of August; the 2026 edition was instead moved up to the last weekend of July, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. The evenings traditionally begin in the early evening, around 8:00 PM, and continue until late at night. It is always advisable to check the dates on the Pro Loco Arpaia Caudium channels, as the placement in the summer calendar can change from year to year.
The Local Lamb Festival is an excellent example of what inland Campania does best: an identity-driven product, a village with history visible in its stones, and no tourist spectacle. Those looking for the Italy of authentic festivals, those organized by volunteers and not by operators, will find exactly that in Arpaia.
After the August 2024 edition, the Laticauda Breed Local Lamb Festival returned to Arpaia with its fifteenth edition, moved up to the last weekend of July: Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, 2026. The historic setting of the event, the square adjacent to the Lombard walls in the Corte area, was confirmed, as was the organization by the Pro Loco Arpaia Caudium.
Two evenings built around the Laticauda breed lamb from the Alto Sannio, the specialty that gives the festival its name: grilled meat as the main course, together with traditional local dishes and Sannio wines. The local press presented the event as one of the reference food and wine events of the weekend in the Sannio, along with other summer festivals in the province of Benevento.
Aromas from the grill, tables set up in front of the Lombard fortifications, and the warmth of Sannio hospitality: the festival formula remained the proven one, with the opening of the stands in the early evening and live music accompanying dinner until late at night. The event attracted crowds from all over the Caudina Valley and the Neapolitan area, which is just over an hour's drive from Arpaia.
Saturday, July 25, 2026 — First evening of the 15th edition: opening of the food stands in the square of the Lombard walls, in the Corte area, with the festival menu based on grilled and oven-baked Laticauda breed lamb. Live music accompanying dinner.
Sunday, July 26, 2026 — Second and final evening, with the same gastronomic and musical formula.
The Pro Loco Arpaia Caudium did not publish a detailed hourly program or the names of the guest musical groups on the web. As in previous editions, the opening of the stands is traditionally set around 8:00 PM and the evenings continue until late at night.
Square adjacent to the Lombard walls, Corte area (Via Corte), 82011 Arpaia (BN), Campania.
By car: Arpaia is located on the former State Road 7 Appia, at the entrance to the Caudina Valley. From the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Ovest or Baiano exit; from the A1, pass through Caserta Sud and Maddaloni. From Naples, the journey takes about an hour, from Benevento about 45 minutes. Parking in the village is limited: it is best to leave the car along the access roads and reach the Corte on foot.
By train: the Benevento-Cancello line stops in Arpaia; however, evening service is limited, so the car remains the most practical solution for a festival that ends late at night.
Free entry to the event area. You only pay for what you consume, with the popular price list typical of village festivals. Cash is recommended: volunteer stands do not always have electronic payment options.
Arrive early, by 8:30 PM, to avoid queues at the stands during peak hours. Summer evenings in the Caudina Valley can be cool: a light sweatshirt is useful. For accommodation in the area, the widest selection is found in Sant'Agata de' Goti, Airola, and Montesarchio.
