Summer concerts in the castle courtyards of Bolzano
KLANGfesteMUSICALI is one of the most appreciated summer music festivals in South Tyrol. Organized by the Südtiroler Kulturinstitut, the event transforms the courtyards of the city's castles into stages under the stars each year, offering the public of Bolzano and the entire province a musical program that is sophisticated yet accessible, curious, and international.
The iconic venue for KLANGfesteMUSICALI is Castel Roncolo (Schloss Runkelstein), the medieval fortress perched above Bolzano, famous for its secular frescoes. Concerts are held in the castle's open-air courtyard, generally in the evening: the historical setting and the surrounding Alpine landscape make every evening an experience that blends music, heritage, and atmosphere. In case of bad weather, concerts are moved to the Waltherhaus, the Kulturinstitut's cultural headquarters in the city center.
The hallmark of the festival is cross-pollination: the lineup features Nordic folk, Alpine swing, Balkan jazz, and classical and contemporary music. Each edition brings together groups from all over Europe alongside South Tyrolean ensembles, with a special focus on artistic quality and the spirit of cultural openness that characterizes the bilingual territory of South Tyrol.
The KLANGfesteMUSICALI network also extends beyond the capital: some evenings take place at Castelbello Castle (Schloss Kastelbell) in the Vinschgau Valley, another exceptional historical setting. The festival is thus a project that spans the entire province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
Founded in the early 2000s, the event has become a landmark of Bolzano's summer calendar, capable of attracting a loyal and curious audience. The combination of high-level music and castle settings makes KLANGfesteMUSICALI one of the most distinctive cultural offerings of the summer in South Tyrol.
The 27th edition of KLANGfesteMUSICALI was held from June 17 to July 8, 2026, in the courtyards of Bolzano's castles. The lineup, true to the festival's mission, intertwined different genres and traditions: Nordic folk, Alpine swing, Balkan jazz, and classical and contemporary music, with groups from Finland, Bavaria, and Vienna performing alongside the South Tyrolean Bozen Brass.
Among the events at Castel Roncolo, the Bozen Brass presented their "Crossroads" program, where classical music meets jazz and contemporary rhythms; on July 6, it was the turn of the Finnish group Frigg, while the Arcis Saxophon Quartett from Munich closed the festival on July 8.
For the first time, the festival involved Castel Mareccio (Schloss Maretsch), which hosted the Electric KLANGfesteMUSICALI, an afternoon and evening with free admission entirely dedicated to electronic music: an opening towards new languages and new audiences.
Castel Roncolo (Schloss Runkelstein), Via Sant'Antonio 15, Bolzano/Bozen. Some concerts are held at Castelbello Castle (Vinschgau Valley) and, for the electronic edition, at Castel Mareccio (Schloss Maretsch).
Bolzano is accessible by train along the Brenner line (Bolzano station) and by car via the A22 Brenner-Modena motorway, taking the Bolzano South or Bolzano North exit. Castel Roncolo is connected to the city center by a free shuttle bus and a pedestrian path.
