About Kaninchenschau Lagundo

Every late summer, the Thalguterhaus in Lagundo/Algund hosts the Kaninchenschau, a purebred rabbit exhibition organized by the local chapter of the South Tyrol Rabbit Breeders Federation. Breeders from the Burgraviato gather in the Raiffeisensaal to present their purebred animals to the public, evaluated by expert judges. A traditional livestock event that is free and family-friendly, blending a passion for small-scale animal husbandry with South Tyrolean rural culture and curiosity about the many rabbit breeds raised in the Merano area.

The Kaninchenschau in Lagundo

The Kaninchenschau, or purebred rabbit exhibition, is one of the most characteristic events in the calendar of Lagundo/Algund, a municipality in the Burgraviato district of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. Every year, towards the end of summer, local breeders meet at the Thalguterhaus—the town's cultural and community hub—to host an exhibition dedicated to small-scale backyard livestock.

Purebred rabbits on display

At the heart of the event are the purebred rabbits: animals carefully selected and nurtured throughout the year, displayed in orderly cages inside the Raiffeisensaal, the main hall of the Thalguterhaus. Visitors can get an up-close look at the various breeds raised in the Merano area—from large varieties to dwarf and long-haired types—admiring their coats, build, and distinctive features. Expert judges evaluate the specimens according to breed standards, awarding prizes and recognition to the breeders.

A tradition of South Tyrolean rural culture

The exhibition is organized by the local branch of the South Tyrol Rabbit Breeders Federation (Kaninchenzüchterverband Südtirol), which is active in the Burgraviato district. Like many small-scale livestock events in South Tyrol, the Kaninchenschau is not just a meeting point for breeders, but also an opportunity to introduce the public and younger generations to the world of amateur breeding, animal care, and the rural traditions that define this corner of the Trentino-Alto Adige region.

An event for the whole family

Admission to the exhibition is free, and the atmosphere is typical of local village events: relaxed, well-organized, and welcoming. There is also a traditional refreshment service featuring local specialties, managed by the Thalguterhaus kitchen, making the visit a pleasant social occasion. The Kaninchenschau is particularly popular with families with children, who are fascinated by the chance to see dozens of rabbits of different breeds and colors up close.

The Thalguterhaus, the heart of Lagundo's community

The event takes place in the Thalguterhaus, located in the pedestrian zone of Lagundo and easily accessible. The Raiffeisensaal, with its over 450 square meters topped by a high wooden dome, is the ideal venue to welcome both breeders and visitors. The facility has been the reference point for the town's community life for years and hosts numerous cultural initiatives for the Lagundo/Algund community throughout the year.

Kaninchenschau Lagundo — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Kaninchenschau is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, at the Thalguterhaus in Lagundo/Algund, in the Raiffeisensaal. The setup of the cages and the placement of the animals are planned starting from the afternoon of Friday, August 21. As per tradition, breeders from the Burgraviato will present their purebred rabbits, which will be evaluated by judges. Details regarding opening hours for the public and the breeds in competition will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.

The Kaninchenschau 2026 will be held on August 22 and 23 at the Thalguterhaus in Lagundo/Algund, with setup beginning on the afternoon of August 21.
