Itri Hills Wild Asparagus Festival

A festival born from a foraged treasure

Wild asparagus isn't farmed; it's hunted. It grows among the dry-stone walls, olive groves, and scrubland of the hills surrounding Itri, a town in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio, halfway between Fondi and Formia. Foraging is a spring ritual that entire families in Itri have practiced for generations, walking the trails of the Monti Aurunci with bundles of thin, slightly bitter shoots in hand. From this tradition, the Itri Hills Wild Asparagus Festival was born, promoted by the cultural association Lokomotiv Musik to celebrate a product that, while lacking a commercial market, possesses a strong local identity.

Where and how it takes place

The festival is held in Piazza Sandro Pertini, in the heart of the modern part of town, with open-air stalls and communal tables set up in the square. It follows the classic village festival format: you purchase tickets at the counter, collect your food from the stalls, and eat together—either seated or standing—while the stage remains active until late. Entry to the area is free, and you only pay for what you consume.

What to eat

The menu is built entirely around wild asparagus foraged in the Itri countryside by association members and their families. Past editions have featured:

• Appetizers such as savory ricotta and asparagus pies, local olives, and cheeses;
• Pasta dishes like pennette with asparagus, the festival's signature dish;
• Main courses and side dishes featuring asparagus, often served as frittatas;
• Tastings of other local products, from extra virgin olive oil from the Monti Aurunci to wines from the Monti Cecubi area.

In 2025, the catering was handled by several local businesses—including Pasta Indipendente, Mani in Pasta, and Masseria Valle Torre—with bar service provided by Bicchieron's Cafè.

Music and atmosphere

The festival is more than just a culinary event: music has been central since the very first editions, even intersecting in the past with the SpauRock! festival, which was dedicated to emerging bands from southern Lazio and beyond. Recently, the evening has alternated between live concerts and DJ sets, with local bands playing in the square until late at night. It’s a format that attracts all ages: families and curious visitors in the early hours, followed by music lovers and young people as the night progresses.

Itri: the town and its surroundings

Itri is worth a visit even outside of the festival. The medieval village, dominated by its Castle with a cylindrical tower, climbs the hillside with narrow alleys, arches, and stairways. The ancient Appian Way passes nearby, and the municipal territory extends into the Monti Aurunci Natural Park, a hiker's paradise. Itri is also famous for its Itrana olive and the resulting extra virgin olive oil, another hallmark of the town. The sea of the Gulf of Gaeta is only a few kilometers away, leading many visitors to combine a day at the beach with an evening in the square.

If you are looking for a massive, spectacular fair, look elsewhere; here, the value lies in its scale. A single square, a product you won't find in supermarkets, food prepared by volunteers, affordable prices, and music played by locals.
