The first shared Carnival between Leonforte, Assoro, and Nissoria in the Enna province
The Itinerant Carnival is an event born in 2026 from the collaboration between the municipalities of Leonforte, Assoro, and Nissoria, three towns in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. For the first time, the three towns chose to join forces under a single banner, creating what has been dubbed the First Shared Carnival of the region: an itinerant route that, stop by stop, travels through the streets and squares of the three municipalities with mask parades, costumed groups, confetti, and streamers.
The itinerant format is the true innovation of this festival: the event moves from town to town on the Sundays of Carnival, concluding with the grand finale on Shrove Tuesday in Leonforte. Each stop features parades of costumed groups and individual masks, entertainment, music, and street performances, in a joyful atmosphere that involves families, children, and local associations.
The heart of the event is the closing evening in Leonforte, with a gathering in Piazza Branciforti and a grand parade along Corso Umberto and the streets of the historic center. The festivities continue with performances, shows, and musical entertainment, leading into a dance party that brings the town to life. The official soundtrack of the Carnival, titled Yellow Carnival and composed by Fiorella and Pino Marraffino, accompanies the parades and provides a sonic identity to the event.
Leonforte boasts a great carnival tradition: in the early nineties, its floats and parades were compared to those of Sciacca and Acireale, among the most famous in Sicily. The Itinerant Carnival was born precisely with the goal of reviving this legacy, networking the energy of three neighboring communities. The promoting mayors—Piero Livolsi for Leonforte, Antonio Licciardo for Assoro, and Rosario Colianni for Nissoria—presented the initiative as an ambitious challenge to unite the territories and generate positive impacts for local businesses and associations.
The Itinerant Carnival is now one of the most anticipated events in the Enna winter calendar, capable of transforming Nissoria, Assoro, and Leonforte into a large open-air stage for a few days.
The 2026 edition inaugurated the Itinerant Carnival, the first shared Carnival between the municipalities of Nissoria, Assoro, and Leonforte. The route opened on Sunday, February 8 in Nissoria, continued on Sunday, February 15 in Assoro, and concluded on Tuesday, February 17 in Leonforte with the grand Shrove Tuesday finale.
In Leonforte, the gathering was set for 3:30 PM in Piazza Branciforti, with a grand parade along Corso Umberto and the streets of the center (Via Campo Sportivo, Via Pirandello, Via Papa Giovanni XXIII, Via Don Giovanni Bosco). The festivities continued with performances and shows in Piazza Carella and, from 9:00 PM, with musical entertainment by Radio Time 90 in Via Salina, at the Sports Field. The soundtrack Yellow Carnival, by Fiorella and Pino Marraffino, accompanied the event.
Leonforte is located in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello exit) or via the SS121. The nearest train station is Leonforte-Pirato, on the Palermo-Catania line. The stops in Assoro and Nissoria are just a few kilometers from Leonforte.
The Itinerant Carnival takes place during the weeks of Carnival, between late January and February, with the grand finale on Shrove Tuesday in Leonforte.
