The night of the December 8th fires in the heart of Alta Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When December 8th arrives, Morra De Sanctis prepares for one of the most heartfelt evenings on its calendar: Itinerando i Falò dell'Immacolata. In this small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania, the darkness of the winter evening is broken by stacks of wood burning in the districts and squares of the village, drawing in residents, those returning home for the holidays, and visitors from neighboring towns.
This is no staged tourist spectacle: it is a community ritual, passed down through generations and organized every year by the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis in partnership with the Municipality, guiding the public from one fire to the next.
In the Irpinian tradition, the Immaculate Conception bonfires are more than just a party. The flames hold a purifying value: according to local lore, the fire symbolizes the cleansing of original sin and serves as a propitiatory rite for the land's abundance, during a time of year historically linked to sowing. Sacred and profane coexist without contradiction, as is often the case in the festivals of the Campanian Apennines.
The celebration begins long before the lighting. In the days leading up to December 8th, dozens of men and youths from the town organize to gather the wood needed to build the pyres. Children go from house to house with carts, and every family contributes a bundle of sticks: a symbolic gesture, even more than a practical one, that reaffirms the value of collaboration and a sense of neighborhood belonging.
The name of the event says it all: there is not just one bonfire. Several are lit in different parts of the municipal territory, from the scattered rural districts to the town center. The route traditionally touches the Santa Lucia area and Piazza San Rocco, culminating with the main bonfire in Piazza Francesco De Sanctis, the square that locals have always called La Teglia. Moving from one fire to another is part of the experience: walking in the evening chill, arriving at the warmth of the embers, and moving on again.
It is around the main bonfire that the ritual takes its most recognizable form. Dozens of women gather around the fire to sing religious hymns dedicated to the Madonna, while all around, sandwiches, wine, and local products are shared. It is the moment when the devotional and the convivial dimensions merge: people pray, sing, and eat together, often late into the night.
Morra De Sanctis is not an isolated case. Between December 5th and 8th, the entire Alta Irpinia region lights up with fires, each with a different local name:
Those in the area can create their own small itinerary of the Irpinian fires, with Morra De Sanctis standing out as one of the most authentic stops because the ritual remains strictly tied to the life of the village.
The town owes its name to the great literary critic Francesco De Sanctis, whose birthplace can be visited in the historic center today. The village also preserves the Castello Biondi-Morra, which overlooks the town, and a network of churches and buildings reconstructed after the earthquakes that marked the history of Alta Irpinia. The patron saint is San Rocco, celebrated in August, but the Morra calendar is full of events: the Santa Lucia Fair on December 13th with local products, summer literary dinners dedicated to De Sanctis, and the Christmas events that enliven the village in the weeks following the bonfires.
It is worth coming up here for a winter evening precisely because nothing is artificial: the fire, the songs, the shared wine, and the cold fought together tell of a way of experiencing a festival that in Campania is preserved above all in the small towns of the hinterland. It is an opportunity to understand Irpinian folk culture up close, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
At the time of publication, no official announcement regarding the 2026 edition of Itinerando i Falò dell'Immacolata in Morra De Sanctis, in the Province of Avellino, has been released. The date, times, and order of the bonfire lightings are therefore not yet confirmed.
Based on previous editions, the evening usually involves lighting several bonfires in different parts of the municipal territory, from the districts to Piazza San Rocco, with the main fire in Piazza Francesco De Sanctis, known as La Teglia, accompanied by religious songs and the sharing of sandwiches, wine, and local products. However, none of this is to be considered confirmed for 2026 until the organizers release the official communication.
The program is usually published by the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis a few days before the event on the association's website and Facebook page, and covered by the local Irpinian press. You can also contact the Pro Loco directly at +39 347 9991670 or at the address [email protected].
The bonfires are lit in several spots in Morra De Sanctis (AV): in the districts, in the Santa Lucia area, in Piazza San Rocco, and, for the main fire, in Piazza Francesco De Sanctis, known as La Teglia.
The most convenient way is by car: Morra De Sanctis is located in Alta Irpinia, in the area of Lioni and Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, east of the capital Avellino. The historic center is small and can be explored entirely on foot; it is best to leave your car at the edge of the town and walk to the fires.
Participation in the bonfires in the squares and districts is free and open to all.
This is a December evening in the mountains: wear very warm clothing, comfortable shoes for moving between bonfires, and keep an eye on children near the lit pyres.
