The time trial event of the Italian Championships: 40 km from Vicoforte to Barolo, in the heart of the Langhe
On Thursday, June 25, 2026, the town of Vicoforte, in the province of Cuneo, becomes the stage for one of the most anticipated events in Italian cycling: the Men's Elite individual time trial of the Italian Road Cycling Championships. This is the race against the clock that awards the prestigious tricolore jersey, which the winner will wear for a year in all time trials on the international calendar.
The start is set in front of the majestic Sanctuary Basilica of the Nativity of Mary, the iconic monument of Vicoforte famous for its elliptical dome, the largest of its kind in the world. From here, athletes set off one by one along a 40-kilometer course that concludes in Barolo, in the heart of the Langhe and the capital of the wine of the same name, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This is not a flat time trial for pure specialists: the route features a continuous series of undulations, with a total elevation gain of approximately 450 meters. After starting in the Monregalese area, athletes pass through Dogliani and Monchiero before the final climb that precedes the descent toward the finish line in the village of Barolo. A varied course that rewards well-rounded riders capable of combining power and endurance on the gradients.
For Vicoforte and the entire Monregalese region, the event represents an extraordinary media showcase: the race is followed by live television coverage and national press, with the Basilica and the Cuneo hills taking center stage. The organization is managed by ExtraGiro on behalf of the Italian Cycling Federation. The time trial is part of the Italian Championships program, which in this 2026 edition takes place entirely on the roads of Piedmont: the time trial on Thursday, June 25, is followed on Saturday, June 27, by the Asti-Cuneo road race, which also passes through Vicoforte.
The time trial is a free, open-air event: the public can watch the start in front of the Vicoforte Basilica, along the 40 km route, or at the finish in Barolo. The time trial format, with riders starting at regular intervals, provides continuous excitement throughout the afternoon.
