Campania meets Piedmont: Irpinian traditions, cuisine, and music in Cambiano
The Irpinia Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Cambiano, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. Born to preserve and pass on the roots of a community of Campanian origin that settled in the Piedmontese territory, the festival transforms the Pro Loco Area for an entire weekend in June into a corner of Upper Irpinia, filled with the aromas of Southern cuisine, folk music, and moments of shared memory.
At the heart of the event is the bond of friendship and twinning that has united Cambiano with the Irpinian towns of Aquilonia and Monteverde, in the province of Avellino, since 2012. Each edition sees the participation of Campanian officials and delegations, in an institutional and human dialogue that renews itself year after year. The festival thus becomes not only a gastronomic and folkloric celebration but also an opportunity to recount the history of migration and integration between Northern and Southern Italy.
The program weaves together themed dinners featuring traditional Irpinian cuisine, photographic and art exhibitions, masterclasses dedicated to handmade pasta, and folk music concerts. Highlights include the pizzica dance, parades through the historic center animated by the "La Giovine" Musical Band of Cambiano, the Flag-wavers of Bra, and twirling performances, all culminating in grand fireworks displays that close the event in style.
Reaching its twentieth edition in 2026, the Irpinia Festival is organized by the Cultural Association for the Preservation of Irpinian Folk Traditions in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Cambiano and under the patronage of the Municipality of Cambiano. It is an appointment that, edition after edition, confirms how deeply the traditions of Irpinia have become a living and recognized part of the cultural fabric of Cambiano.
The 2026 edition marked the twentieth anniversary of the Irpinia Festival in Cambiano, with a program spread over three days. Thursday, June 4, opened with a dinner hosted by "La Tripa 'd Muncale" and a musical evening by the group Jukebox; Friday, June 5, featured the inauguration of the "Friends of the South" exhibition, a dinner with traditional Irpinian cuisine, and a concert by the Campania Ensemble.
Saturday, June 6, the heart of the anniversary, saw the "Hands in the Dough: Li Maccarunar" masterclass, a celebration at the Library with testimonials and the inauguration of the "Irpinian and Cambianese Stories and Memories" section, a parade in the historic center with the La Giovine Band, the Flag-wavers of Bra, and the "Le Asparagette" twirling team, followed by an Irpinian dinner, a concert by "La Banda della Posta," and fireworks on Strada Mosetti.
The main events are held at the Pro Loco Area in Cambiano (TO), with various activities spread throughout the historic center and at the municipal library.
By car: Cambiano is easily reached from the Turin ring road heading towards Asti/Chieri. By train: the Cambiano-Santena station is served by the Turin-Chieri-Asti line, a short distance from the center. The nearest airport is Turin-Caselle.
The themed dinners are very popular: booking with the organizers is recommended. The event takes place largely outdoors, with free access to exhibition areas and performances.
