About International Tiber Descent

The International Tiber Descent is the great river adventure that every year, in multiple daily stages, brings dozens of participants from all over Europe to navigate the Tiber from Città di Castello to Rome. By canoe, kayak, packraft, SUP or on foot along the banks, the initiative combines outdoor sports, discovery of villages and river landscapes, and environmental monitoring. The first stage reaches Umbertide, in the Upper Tiber Valley.

The Tiber from Città di Castello to Rome

The International Tiber Descent is one of the most evocative river initiatives in Italy: a multi-day crossing that follows the course of the Tiber from the Upper Tiber Valley to Rome. Over fifty participants, many of them foreign, take part, tackling the river by canoe, kayak, packraft, SUP or walking along the riverbanks.

The Umbertide stage

The Umbrian route includes Città di Castello, Umbertide, Ponte San Giovanni, Pretola, Deruta, Corbara, Alviano, Montemolino, and Casalina. The first day connects Città di Castello to Umbertide (province of Perugia), passing through natural environments, villages, and river landscapes of great value. For the town of Umbertide, it is an opportunity to rediscover its relationship with the river that saw its birth.

Sport and environment

In addition to the sporting and tourist dimension, the Descent has a strong environmental focus: environmental monitoring projects, plastic waste collection, and participatory science initiatives on the Tiber's aquatic biodiversity are planned along the stages, demonstrating attention to the protection of the river and its ecosystems.
