Puppetry, shadow theatre, and experimental performance in Poggibonsi
The International Shadow Theatre Festival is one of the longest-running and most original events dedicated to puppetry in Tuscany. It takes place in Poggibonsi, in the province of Siena, as part of the broader summer calendar Piazze d'Armi e di Città, promoted by the Fondazione Elsa Culture Comuni. Conceived and directed by Marcella Fragapane, the festival has built a distinct identity over the years, defined by shadow plays, puppetry, storytelling, and experimental performing arts.
Evenings are split between two iconic city landmarks: the Teatro Politeama, Poggibonsi's historic cultural hub, and the Cassero della Fortezza, a Medici fortification that provides a unique, dramatic backdrop for outdoor summer performances. This dual nature, balancing the traditional theatre hall with an open-air historic site, is one of the festival's defining features.
The festival hosts some of the most acclaimed Italian and international companies in the puppetry and contemporary theatre scene. Over the years, Poggibonsi has welcomed names such as Teatro Gioco Vita, Babilonia Teatri, Teatro del Drago, Teatro la Ribalta, Muta Imago, and award-winning performers like Saverio La Ruina. Many of the featured shows have received major national accolades, from the Eolo Prize to the Ubu Prize, reflecting the high quality of the artistic selection.
As part of the rich landscape of Tuscan summer events, the International Shadow Theatre Festival represents a major cultural draw for the Municipality of Poggibonsi. The event combines its international programming with a deep connection to the Valdelsa area of Siena, offering residents and visitors high-quality theatre in locations of great historical charm.
The 30th edition of the International Shadow Theatre Festival offered three high-quality events in Poggibonsi. On Tuesday, June 9, at the Politeama Sala Maggiore (9:00 PM), Lo Specchio della Regina by Teatro la Ribalta - Kunst der Vielfalt, winner of the Eolo Prize 2025, was performed. On Wednesday, June 10, at the Cassero della Fortezza (9:45 PM), Golem - e fango è il mondo by Teatro del Drago was presented. On Friday, June 12, also at the Cassero (9:45 PM), Ashes by Index/Muta Imago, recipient of the Ubu Prize 2022, took the stage.

Performances are held at the Teatro Politeama and the Cassero della Fortezza in Poggibonsi.
