A month of lights, entertainment, and a Living Nativity in the streets of Siano, in the Irno Valley
«Illuminiamoci di Magia» is the Christmas program promoted by the Municipality of Siano, in the Province of Salerno, which transforms the town into an enchanted place from December 7th to January 6th. Lights, traditions, music, and emotions guide the entire community through a special Christmas season. It is not just a single event, but a widespread calendar of activities spanning the town's squares, streets, and gathering spots, designed for children, families, and anyone who loves the festive atmosphere.
The lighting of the festive displays kicks off the event and sets the pace for the following weeks: the Santa Claus village, shows and entertainment for children, inflatables, face painting, musical moments, and the bingo games that remain the most shared tradition of December evenings in Campania. The festivities conclude on January 6th with the arrival of the Befana, who celebrates with the children and, as the popular saying goes, takes all the holidays away with her.
The most anticipated moment of the program is the Siano Living Nativity, which has returned to animate the village streets after a decade-long absence and is being presented in the 2025-2026 season as the fourth edition of the new series. The performance is born from the collaboration between the SS. Annunziata and Santa Maria delle Grazie parishes, under the spiritual guidance of Father Giacomo De Filippis, with the patronage of the Municipality. It involves a large number of participants: young people, children, the elderly, and entire local families who leave their homes for a few evenings to become shepherds, artisans, soldiers, and travelers.
The scenes are set in the Vignolìa countryside and along via Sala, in an itinerant layout that invites visitors to walk, pause before the living tableaux, and be guided step-by-step into the village of Bethlehem. It is not merely a scenic display: the Siano community experiences it as a moment of great religious, cultural, and collective value, capable of reconnecting different generations.
The itinerary begins with the census ordered by Caesar Augustus during the time of Governor Quirinius, with the Roman garrison and soldiers welcoming visitors at the entrance. From there, the path crosses scenes of daily life from two thousand years ago and concludes before the Nativity. The main stages of the route include:
The choice to orient the final scene toward the mountain is not accidental: it recalls the figure of the saint from Assisi, to whom we owe the first living nativity in history, in Greccio in 1223, and links the small Campanian performance to a tradition that spans all of Italy.
«Illuminiamoci di Magia» works because it combines two different registers. On one hand, there is the children's Christmas, made of colorful lights, inflatables, gifts, and photos with Santa Claus; on the other, there is the more intimate dimension of the Living Nativity, with its evangelical scenes and the silence of winter evenings along via Sala. The result is a program that speaks as much to local families as it does to visitors arriving from the neighboring towns of the Irno Valley and the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area.
Siano is a small town in the Irno Valley, in Campania, a short distance from Salerno and on the edge of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area: a border position reflected in its traditions, halfway between the rural culture of the valley and the more urban one of the plains. Religious festivals and municipal events remain the main opportunity to gather here, and Christmas, with its long month of appointments, is probably the moment when the town shows its best side.
Those who visit Siano during this period will find an illuminated village, pedestrian-friendly streets, and simple hospitality, without the crowds of the major Campanian Christmas events. It is the kind of festival you discover by chance and remember for the atmosphere, rather than the numbers.
The first days of January represented the final act of the Siano Christmas festival. The Living Nativity, now in the fourth edition of its new series, offered three final performances following the cycle of shows in late December, confirming itself as the most followed event of the program.
The two evenings of January 5th and 6th, open from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM on via Sala, attracted visitors from neighboring towns in the Irno Valley and the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area, drawn by word-of-mouth about the return of a tradition that had been missing for about ten years. The route, as in previous evenings, led the public from the Roman census garrison to the Nativity manger.
On January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, the festival also shifted to its more playful side, with the arrival of the Befana and moments dedicated to children, before the switching off of the lights that had illuminated the town center for a month.
Thursday, January 1, 2026 — first performance of the new year of the Living Nativity along the route set up in Siano.
Monday, January 5, 2026, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM — Living Nativity on via Sala: Roman census, scenes of daily life, Bethlehem Square, Bethlehem Inn, Synagogue, Oasis of Jerusalem, and Nativity manger.
Tuesday, January 6, 2026, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM — final performance of the Living Nativity on via Sala.
Tuesday, January 6, 2026 — closing of «Illuminiamoci di Magia» with the arrival of the Befana and the party dedicated to children.
Siano is located in the Irno Valley, in the Province of Salerno, a short distance from Castel San Giorgio and the towns of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area. By car, it can be reached from the motorway exits in the area between Nocera Inferiore and Castel San Giorgio; by train, the reference stations are those of the Salerno-Nocera Inferiore line, with a connection by bus or taxi.
The events of «Illuminiamoci di Magia» take place in the squares and streets of the center. The Living Nativity is itinerant and unfolds along via Sala and in the Vignolìa countryside: it is recommended to park in the center and reach the entrance of the route on foot.
