The Il Rovo Literary Contest in Cagnano Varano

In the heart of the Gargano National Park, the village of Cagnano Varano, in the province of Foggia, is home to the Il Rovo Literary Contest, one of the most established literary awards in northern Puglia. Created to give a voice to writing in all its forms, the contest has grown with each edition to become a national event, attracting poets and storytellers from across Italy while maintaining a deep connection with the local Gargano community that hosts it.

Three categories: Poetry, Prose, and Legality

The contest is divided into three categories. Poetry, with an open theme, welcomes verse compositions or short poetic prose; Prose, also with an open theme or inspired by an Italian proverb, highlights the short story, a form often overlooked by literary awards; the Legality category, the most distinctive, proposes a civil and moral theme each year, keeping the memory of the territory and its values alive. It is this third category that gives Il Rovo its unique character, weaving culture and civic commitment into a single literary gesture.

A village evening in Largo Purgatorio

The awards ceremony is held every summer outdoors, in the evocative setting of Largo Purgatorio, in the historic center of Cagnano Varano. It is not just a simple ceremony: the evening alternates readings of the winning entries with moments of live music—percussion, piano—and concludes with an aperitif featuring local products, transforming the awards into a true community celebration. Local authorities and law enforcement representatives regularly attend, testifying to the civic value of the initiative.

An award rooted in the Gargano

Organized by the Pro Loco Association of Cagnano Varano, the contest awards the top finishers in each category with plaques and recognition, and includes special mentions as well as a prize dedicated to Gargano authors, highlighting the bond with the roots and the territory. The twinning with the Il Tratturo Magno award also offers winners the opportunity to travel and discover other cultural sites in Southern Italy.
