About Il Mattinatale

From December 7th to January 6th, Mattinata lights up for "Il Mattinatale — Mo' Vené Natéle," the municipal Christmas festival that fills the historic center of this Gargano village with illuminations, markets, concerts, and local flavors. The heart of the event is the Living Nativity in Contrada Apollo, where dozens of actors recreate ancient Bethlehem among artisan workshops and the Holy Family's grotto. A widespread Christmas celebration in the province of Foggia, featuring community spirit, wandering bagpipers, and free events for all ages.

Mattinata's Widespread Christmas

"Il Mattinatale — Mo' Vené Natéle" is the Christmas event calendar promoted by the Municipality of Mattinata, a village in the Gargano area of the province of Foggia, Puglia. For an entire month, from December 7th to January 6th, the streets and squares of the historic center transform into a path of lights, music, and traditions, involving parishes, associations, schools, and local entities in one great community narrative. The dialect name "Mo' Vené Natéle" ("Christmas is coming now") captures the popular spirit of the festival: a Christmas made of people, streets, and sharing, rather than just shop windows.

The Living Nativity in Contrada Apollo

The heart of the event is the Living Nativity, organized by the Mattinata a Cavallo association in Via Archita, Contrada Apollo. Here, the ancient village of Bethlehem takes shape: dozens of participants—children, adults, and entire families—bring to life artisan workshops, the bakery, the kitchen, the tavern, and animal enclosures, leading up to the Holy Family's grotto. It is not merely a performance, but a narrative and spiritual journey that makes visitors part of the Gospel story. The event concludes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men, who parade through the town streets before reaching the Nativity.

Lights, Markets, and Music

The calendar alternates festive moments for all ages: the lighting of the illuminations, the Expo Natale with market stalls in Piazza Aldo Moro, parades by the local band, wandering music, and zampognari (bagpipers) bringing the sounds of Gargano tradition through the alleys. There are also events at the Municipal Theater, with plays and musicals dedicated to families, and concerts in the village churches.

  • Living Nativity in Contrada Apollo, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men at Epiphany
  • Expo Natale: markets and crafts in Piazza Aldo Moro
  • Zampognari and wandering music in the city center
  • Shows and musicals at the Municipal Theater
  • Food and wine tours such as "Wine Xmas" and "Jingle Spritz"

Flavors and Nature of the Gargano

Alongside cultural events, "Il Mattinatale" highlights local flavors with food and wine appointments like Wine Xmas, Jingle Spritz, and "Il Mattinatale a Tavola." The "Green" program, curated with partners like Daunia Tur, the Italian Touring Club, and Gargano Natour, offers excursions and trekking toward Monte Saraceno and the trails of the Gargano National Park, combining the festivities with landscape exploration. It is a way to experience Mattinata by day, between sea and mountains, in the heart of Puglia.

A Community Christmas

Promoted by the Municipality of Mattinata with the parish Caritas, the Casa dell'Arte, the "Pier Giorgio Frassati" oratory, and numerous local associations, "Il Mattinatale" has grown edition after edition to become the defining winter event for the town. Most events are free, designed to fill the village with families, residents, and visitors throughout the holiday season.
