About Il Gonfalone di Arpino

Il Gonfalone di Arpino is the historic palio that every summer pits the Districts and Contrade of Cicero's hometown against each other in the heart of the Ciociaria region. Between the donkey race, the wheelbarrow race, tug-of-war, and the famous cannata race reserved for womenโ€”recognized as UNESCO heritage in 2022โ€”the event weaves together folklore, popular traditions, and Ciociarian cuisine. Costume parades, district festivals, and the Palio Days bring Arpino, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio, to life every August.

Il Gonfalone di Arpino, the palio of the Land of Cicero

The Gonfalone di Arpino is the most important folk event in the village, a historic palio that every summer brings the Districts and Contrade of the city into competition. Born in the early seventies, the Gonfalone has grown to become the defining event for Arpino, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio: the prize is the drappo, a banner painted each year by a renowned artist, which the winning community keeps until the following edition. The re-enactment is rooted in the ancestral customs of the Ciociarian land and the pride of the hometown of Marcus Tullius Cicero.

The competing Districts and Contrade

Seven districts, including Quartieri (Districts) and Contrade (Wards), participate in the challenge, spending weeks preparing parades, costumes, and teams: Collecarino, Vallone, Vignepiane, Vuotti, Arco, Civita Falconara, and Ponte. Each one enlivens its own corner of the town with flags, colors, and a sporting rivalry lived with passion by entire families, from generation to generation.

Traditional races for the conquest of the banner

The gonfalone is awarded at the end of six popular races, held in the historic center before the public:

  • the donkey race, a spectacular and unpredictable trial;
  • the wheelbarrow race;
  • the cannata race, reserved exclusively for women;
  • the sack race;
  • the relay race;
  • the tug-of-war, a test of strength and teamwork.

The cannata race, UNESCO heritage

The most characteristic race is the cannata race: the women of the districts run while balancing a cannata, a terracotta jug filled with water, on their heads without ever using their hands. This tradition, which recalls the ancient gestures of Ciociarian women, was recognized as UNESCO heritage in 2022 and today represents the most authentic symbol of the Gonfalone.

District festivals and Ciociarian cuisine

Before the Palio Days, each district organizes its own district festival: evenings of music, dancing, and above all, tastings of typical Ciociarian dishes prepared according to traditional recipes. It is an opportunity to discover the local gastronomy of the Frosinone area and to experience the most genuine atmosphere of the event, among alleys, small squares, and outdoor tables.

The Night of the Ciociarian Costume

The Gonfalone season opens with the presentation and blessing of the banner, accompanied by the Night of the Ciociarian Costume: couples in traditional dress parade through the historic center, bringing back to life the elegance of the Ciociarian costume and the historical and cultural identity of the territory.

Arpino and the Ciociaria

Perched on a hill overlooking the Liri valley, Arpino is one of the most evocative villages in the Ciociaria, famous for the acropolis of Civitavecchia with its rare pointed arch gate and for being the birthplace of Cicero. The Gonfalone, promoted by the Pro Loco of Arpino with the patronage of the Municipality of Arpino, the Province of Frosinone, and the Lazio Region, is the best way to visit the city by combining history, folklore, and popular tradition.
